Avengers: Doomsday Report Reveals How Doctor Doom’s Motivation Differs from Thanos’

A recent report has revealed Doctor Doom’s plans for the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday movie, and they’re very different from what Thanos wanted. Doctor Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr., will be the main villain as the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Multiverse Saga comes to a close with Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. He’s taking over the role of big bad from Thanos, who was the main villain throughout the previous Infinity Saga.

Though both are major villains in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Doctor Doom and Thanos will have different reasons for their actions. Thanos, in the ‘Infinity Saga,’ wanted the Infinity Stones to eliminate half of all life, believing it would restore balance to the universe. His home planet, Titan, had been destroyed by a lack of resources, and this drove his extreme methods. Despite how drastic his actions were, Thanos believed he was doing what was necessary based on his past.

According to entertainment insider Daniel Richtman, Doctor Doom’s goals in the upcoming Avengers 5 will differ from Thanos’. Richtman reports, through his Patreon, that Doom will be driven by a desire for revenge, and that this revenge will be connected to a deep-seated grudge against the entire Multiverse. This aligns with his earlier claims about Doom’s vendetta.

We don’t fully understand what happened in Doctor Doom’s past to drive his desire for revenge. This is different from Thanos, who believed he was saving the universe, even if it meant extreme measures. But fans likely won’t need to worry about Doom’s motivations; sources suggest he’ll be written using a familiar approach from the Russo Brothers, who always give their villains understandable reasons for their actions.

The next Avengers movie, titled Avengers: Doomsday, will feature a battle between Doctor Doom and a team of heroes gathered from different universes. Over twenty Marvel actors are returning to reprise their iconic roles. The film will be directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, who previously helmed Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. Avengers: Doomsday is currently set to hit theaters on December 18, 2026.

Doctor Doom’s Quest For Revenge

Even though we know Doctor Doom will be driven by revenge in Avengers: Doomsday, and that he’ll likely have a good reason for it, we’re still left wondering what that reason is and how it will lead to a fight with the Avengers.

Doom’s intense hatred of the Multiverse might stem from the destruction of his original universe, or something even worse happening to it. There’s been speculation that events similar to what happened in Avengers: Doomsday – known as “incursions” – are connected. As Reed Richards (played by John Krasinski in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness) explained, incursions happen when the lines between universes break down, causing them to crash into each other and potentially wipe one or both out completely.

If Victor von Doom’s home reality was destroyed by an invasion, it would explain why he’d want to end the Multiverse – to prevent the same fate from happening elsewhere. But destroying the Multiverse would inevitably create conflict with heroes like the Avengers, X-Men, and Fantastic Four, who would fight to protect their own worlds.

Doctor Doom’s scheme now includes Franklin Richards, the incredibly powerful baby of Reed and Sue. Franklin’s abilities could be greater than anything we’ve seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. If Doom can control Franklin, he might be able to fix his own ruined universe (though it would come at a price), or even destroy the entire Multiverse, depending on how far his desire for revenge takes him.
