Avengers: Doomsday Leaks Major X-Men vs. Fantastic Four Showdown

Actor who portrayed Nightcrawler might have revealed a significant fight sequence in Avengers: Doomsday, a clash that could pit the X-Men against another Marvel team, contrary to initial assumptions. Instead of the Avengers, it seems the opposing force will be none other than The Fantastic Four, Marvel’s original superhero family. Although the storyline hasn’t been confirmed as “Avengers vs. X-Men,” as many anticipated due to seven actors from the 20th Century Fox X-Men films joining Avengers: Doomsday, it appears that the X-Men characters will engage in combat, but not with Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, but rather with The Fantastic Four.

In an interview with Buzzfeed UK, Cumming revealed which Marvel character Nightcrawler will be facing off against. It seems that Nightcrawler will engage in a battle with the leader of The Fantastic Four, Mister Fantastic, portrayed by actor Pedro Pascal. Interestingly, Cumming mentioned that they might be filming their scenes independently since he was told about his opponent instead of interacting directly with Pascal on set. This tidbit may slightly dampen fans’ expectations. Cumming stated:

I’m gradually getting the hang of these fights, but it leaves me puzzled, ‘Who exactly am I squaring off against?’ They respond, ‘You’re striking Pedro Pascal on the head.’

The Fantastic Four vs. The X-Men is a Long Time Coming

In “Avengers: Doomsday,” as Kevin Feige has stated, multiple Marvel groups will band together to confront Doctor Doom. However, this doesn’t exclude the possibility of them clashing when they initially meet, which is a common trope in superhero stories. The concept of the X-Men and The Fantastic Four collaborating in “Avengers: Doomsday” seems particularly apt, given that both series were under the control of 20th Century Fox until Disney acquired the studio in 2019. For a long time, these two teams have been excluded from the MCU, but now they are set to become part of it, representing characters from other worlds in a way that subtly references their former ownership.

Back in the 2010s, I was part of a thrilling discussion about a potential movie crossover between The Fantastic Four and the X-Men. We were aiming to keep pace with the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the escalating fascination towards interconnected universes. However, these plans seemed to evaporate after the less-than-favorable reception of the 2015 Fantastic Four film. Originally, Tim Miller had planned to incorporate the Jamie Bell portrayal of Ben Grimm/The Thing in Deadpool 2, but he eventually parted ways with the project. A semi-Fantastic Four and X-Men crossover did materialize in 2024’s Deadpool & Wolverine, where Chris Evans reprised his role as Johnny Storm/The Human Torch, sharing the limelight with Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine and Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool.

It’s intriguing to ponder the reason behind the impending clash in “Avengers: Doomsday”, where Mister Fantastic and Nightcrawler are expected to square off, with potential confrontations among other Avengers and X-Men members as well. The crux of the conflict might revolve around Franklin Richards, son of Reed Richards and Susan Storm. In the comics, Franklin is an Omega-level mutant and one of Marvel Universe’s most powerful entities. Given Sue’s pregnancy confirmed in “The Fantastic Four: First Steps”, there’s a possibility that the X-Men might view Franklin as a fellow mutant and attempt to save or recruit him. This perceived need could lead the X-Men to take action, thereby forcing The Fantastic Four into response.
