Seven years later, he’s joining the fight against Doctor Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr., for one last adventure alongside many other familiar faces.

Marvel fans know that Steve Rogers, Captain America, found happiness after the events of Endgame, living with his wife, Peggy Carter, and their new son. While it’s unclear how he’ll return, his comeback is connected to the increasingly unstable multiverse. The Marvel Cinematic Universe is building towards a major reveal involving Steve, which promises to be a very moving moment for one of his fellow Avengers.

Does Steve Rogers Still Remember Spider-Man?

Steve Rogers might be the only one in the Marvel Cinematic Universe who still remembers Peter Parker. To save the entire multiverse from destruction, Peter asked Doctor Strange to cast a powerful spell. However, the spell had a terrible cost: everyone on Earth forgot Peter Parker existed. He was left completely alone, with no one to rely on, and had to build a new life for himself.

During the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, Steve Rogers wasn’t living in the main timeline (Earth-616). When he traveled back in time at the end of Avengers: Endgame, he created a separate timeline, meaning Doctor Strange’s spell couldn’t affect him. This makes Steve unique – he’s the only one in the multiverse who still remembers Peter Parker from Earth-616. Steve knew Peter from their time together in Civil War and Endgame, but he had already left that timeline before the spell erased everyone’s memories in No Way Home.

Although Avengers: Doomsday suggests Steve Rogers is the only one who remembers Peter Parker, many fans think others still do. Some believe Doctor Strange, since he cast the memory-altering spell, might have excluded himself from its effects. Another popular idea is that the Hulk hasn’t forgotten Peter, referencing a similar storyline in the comics. With Mark Ruffalo returning for Spider-Man: Brand New Day next year, this Hulk theory seems even more plausible.

Even if people have forgotten Peter Parker, the question of who remembers him will be a key part of the story in Avengers: Doomsday. Spider-Man is still considered a suspect in Mysterio’s death, and most people don’t trust him. If the Avengers don’t recall their past experiences with Peter, they might be hesitant to trust Spider-Man as a hero. However, if even one Avenger remembers Peter positively, it could significantly help the team defeat Doctor Doom.

Avengers: Doomsday Can Finally Explore Captain America and Spider-Man’s Relationship

The possibility that Steve Rogers is immune to Doctor Strange’s spell from No Way Home creates an opportunity to develop a stronger connection between him and Spider-Man. While both heroes have appeared in several of the same Marvel Cinematic Universe films – including Captain America: Civil War, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame – they’ve rarely shared scenes together. The lack of interaction between Captain America and Spider-Man has remained a noticeable gap in the MCU.

The latest Avengers movie, Doomsday, is setting up a stronger friendship between Spider-Man and Captain America, similar to how they interact in the Marvel comics. In the comics, Peter Parker (Spider-Man) has always admired Captain America, viewing him as the ideal superhero. Over time, this admiration grows into a mutual respect, with Captain America also recognizing Spider-Man’s heroic qualities.

Over the years, certain comic book panels have become truly memorable. One example is from The Four Fives #1, which marked the 20th anniversary of September 11th. In it, the characters share feelings of sadness, grief, and respect for those who were heroes on that tragic day, forging a rare connection. The story concludes with a powerful image of the two heroes standing together, honoring those they consider the true heroes.

A particularly memorable scene happens during the Civil War storyline, when Spider-Man and Captain America become opponents. In The Amazing Spider-Man #537, they fight, but also discuss their differing beliefs. During this encounter, Steve Rogers delivers his well-known “plant yourself like a tree” speech, which eventually influences Spider-Man to change sides later in the conflict.

As a huge fan, I’m really hoping Avengers: Doomsday finally gives us the Spider-Man and Captain America friendship we’ve always deserved! It would be amazing if Steve Rogers remembered Peter Parker – imagine how powerful and emotional that moment could be! It feels like the MCU has been missing that genuine connection between them for so long, and this could be the perfect way to establish it.

Is Spider-Man Returning in Avengers: Doomsday?

One key question remains about the Steve Rogers theory in Avengers: Doomsday. Although Chris Evans is confirmed to return, Tom Holland’s involvement is still unclear. Marvel has announced almost thirty returning actors for the new Avengers movie, but Tom Holland isn’t among them. Because he was filming Spider-Man: Brand New Day while Doomsday was being made, it’s possible his Spider-Man won’t appear in both films next year.

Recent buzz suggests Spider-Man will appear in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday movie, but it won’t be the version played by Tom Holland. Instead, reports indicate a different Spider-Man will join the Avengers to fight Doctor Doom. If true, this could mean Captain America won’t be able to reconnect with the Peter Parker he knows and remembers.

As a huge Marvel fan, I’m pretty sure we’re going to see Tom Holland’s Spider-Man in the next Avengers movie, even though it hasn’t been officially announced yet. Honestly, it would be a real letdown if he wasn’t in it, especially since we just saw him swinging around in Brand New Day a few months ago. I’m guessing Marvel will keep his appearance under wraps until a trailer drops, or maybe even until the movie actually comes out – they like to keep us guessing!

Don’t expect to see much of Holland’s Spider-Man right away, as the actor has been focused on other projects this year. However, there will be plenty of opportunity for the films to develop his growing relationship with Steve Rogers. The Marvel Cinematic Universe is known for its powerful emotional scenes, even within huge team-up events. If done well, the upcoming film could create a particularly moving moment as Peter Parker connects with someone who remembers his life before the events of No Way Home.

Steve Rogers’ return in Avengers: Doomsday is particularly interesting considering he was absent for much of the Multiverse Saga. Fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe will no doubt be eager to speculate about which heroes he’ll team up with, and a meeting between Captain America and Spider-Man feels especially important – particularly if Spider-Man is the only one who wasn’t affected by Doctor Strange’s spell.
