‘Avengers: Doomsday’ cast includes familiar favorites and an ‘X-Men’ reunion

The running time of the longest Marvel film exceeds 3 hours. On a weekday, the studio unveiled the ensemble cast for the upcoming “Avengers” installment by going beyond that duration in their announcement.

5 hours and 26 minutes was the timeframe required by the superhero studio to officially introduce the cast of the much-awaited “Avengers: Doomsday.” Additionally, they revealed that they had already commenced filming for this anticipated project.

Marvel gradually introduced their cast via live streams on YouTube and various social media platforms. Every 10 minutes or so, they unveiled a new director’s chair bearing an actor’s name, totaling 27 actors in what seemed like a random sequence.

Title “Avengers: Doomsday” signals the reappearance of several beloved Marvel characters, including directors Joe and Anthony Russo. These siblings oversaw the “Avengers” series as it unfolded its intricate narrative leading to “Avengers: Endgame” in 2019. During their appearance at San Diego Comic-Con last year, they unveiled future projects accompanied by Marvel legend Robert Downey Jr., renowned for his role as Tony Stark/Iron Man. In the upcoming film, set for release on May 1, 2026, Downey will reprise his character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) as Doctor Doom.

The conclusion of the announcement video saw Downey strolling along a row of seats, settling into the one labeled with his name. At that point, approximately 10 million viewers were tuned in to X’s live stream.

The X-Men universe from 20th Century Fox is now joining forces with the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Patrick Stewart is set to return as Professor Charles Xavier, reappearing in the upcoming movie “Doomsday” following a brief appearance in last year’s “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.” Ian McKellen, known for his role as Magneto, will make his Marvel debut, possibly resurrecting this character. Kelsey Grammer, who previously played Hank McCoy/Beast in the X-Men films, has also been confirmed to join the cast. In a sneak peek from “The Marvels” in 2023, Grammer made a surprise cameo as Beast during one of their famous mid-credits scenes.

In the X-Men universe of Marvel, I’m thrilled to be joining forces with Alan Cumming, James Marsden, and Rebecca Romijn. Alan played the enigmatic Kurt Wagner/Nightcrawler, while Rebecca brought Mystique, Raven Darkholme, to life before Jennifer Lawrence took up the mantle. And as many fans will remember, James was our Cyclops, Scott Summers.

The entertainment realm of The Walt Disney Company is set to expand significantly following its planned acquisition of 21st Century Fox’s assets. The ripple effects throughout Hollywood are starting to be felt as they struggle to comprehend and adapt to Disney’s growing influence in the industry.

2019 saw Disney acquiring 21st Century Fox, thereby gaining the rights to feature Marvel’s Fantastic Four characters on screen. These characters are often pitted against Doctor Doom. In the upcoming film “The Fantastic Four: First Steps,” set for release on July 25, we see Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm/Invisible Woman, Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic, Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm/Thing, and Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm/Human Torch. These characters are collectively known as the Fantastic Four, and they will reappear in a subsequent film titled “Doomsday.

The upcoming Marvel film titled “Thunderbolts” set to release on May 2nd is expected to share a large portion of its cast with the busy “Doomsday” production. Actors such as Florence Pugh (Yelena Belova), David Harbour (Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian), Lewis Pullman (Bob Reynolds/Sentry), Wyatt Russell (John Walker) and Hannah John-Kamen (Ava Starr/Ghost) will reprise their roles in “Thunderbolts.

Simu Liu, star of “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” is set to repeat his character once more. Additionally, actors Letitia Wright (Shuri), Winston Duke (M’Baku), and Tenoch Huerta Mejia (Namor) from “Black Panther” are also joining the cast. Danny Ramirez, who played Joaquin Torres/Falcon in previous productions including the recent “Captain America: Brave New World,” will make a comeback as well.

Following Chris Evans’ departure as Captain America, Marvel is considering Anthony Mackie to assume the superhero role, offering a new outlook while maintaining a recognizable visage.

I, Channing Tatum, am set to return as Gambit in a future project, having been associated with an “X-Men” spinoff centered around this character previously. Regrettably, these plans were discontinued due to Disney’s takeover of Fox.

There’s a question mark about how the film “Doomsday” will effectively tie up all these characters and intricate plotlines into a single movie. The extended manner of the announcement didn’t sit well with some fans, as one commented on X, “By the time they finish announcing the cast like this, Doomsday would have already been streaming on Disney+.

First Steps” starting Phase 6 in June. The fifth “Avengers” movie, originally titled “Avengers: Kang Dynasty,” has seen some changes due to circumstances surrounding Jonathan Majors’ dismissal from Marvel last year following his legal issues. Majors had portrayed the villain Kang the Conqueror within the MCU previously.
