‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Can Set Up Professor X’s ‘Logan’ Fate

Okay, so the Avengers: Doomsday marketing finally dropped a hint about the X-Men coming back – or at least some of them! Now everyone’s buzzing about what their story will be when the movie hits in late 2026. I’m particularly thinking about Patrick Stewart’s Professor X. They really need to treat that character carefully, because messing with his established story now would feel like a huge step backwards from some of Stewart’s best work in the role.

Patrick Stewart is still widely considered the definitive Professor X, even though the X-Men films later introduced James McAvoy as a younger version of the character. The X-Men movie timeline can be tricky to follow, and Days of Future Past particularly complicated things with its time-travel elements. Now, with Stewart joining the cast of Avengers: Doomsday, the story could become even more complex, even if they stay true to what’s already been established.

The Professor X in the X-Men’s ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Trailer Could Easily Be the Same One From the Fox Movies

The new trailer for Avengers: Doomsday brought back Professor X (Patrick Stewart), Magneto (Ian McKellen), and Cyclops (James Marsden), but it’s still unclear if these are the same characters we’ve seen in past X-Men films. While the trailer doesn’t confirm or deny it, there’s a strong chance this Professor X is the one fans already know, and not a different version like the one that appeared in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

A trailer for Avengers: Doomsday was shown in movie theaters before people saw Avatar: Fire and Ash.

As a huge X-Men fan, I’m really intrigued by how Professor X might appear in Avengers: Doomsday. If it’s the core Professor X we all know and love, it’ll feel very different than what we saw in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. That version of Charles Xavier felt free to do its own thing, only loosely connected to the broader X-Men history. But Doomsday seems like it’ll really try to fit its version of Xavier into what we’ve already seen in the X-Men films, which is great because it means fewer confusing plot holes. Luckily, I think there’s a pretty straightforward way to make it all work!

How ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Can Set up Professor X’s Fate in 2017’s ‘Logan’

20th Century Fox

As a longtime follower of the X-Men films, it’s been fascinating watching the timeline shift. Days of Future Past cleverly created a new path for the franchise, branching off from the events of First Class – which, chronologically, is where this new continuity began. This allowed the filmmakers to essentially reboot things while still honoring the original movies. We’ve been following this timeline up to Logan, a truly poignant film that gave us a final goodbye to both Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine and Patrick Stewart’s Professor X. Now, Logan presents us with a Professor X who’s deeply troubled – his powers are immense, but frighteningly out of control due to his deteriorating mental state. What’s frustrating, though, is that the film never shows us how he reached this point, simply attributing it to old age. It feels like a missed opportunity to explore a complex character arc.

The timeline of the X-Men movies, particularly leading up to Logan, has a significant gap between the events of 2019’s Dark Phoenix and the film where Professor X dies. This jump in time means the same actor plays him in both movies, leaving a period of unexplained events. This makes this era ideal for bringing Professor X, along with other X-Men from this timeline, into Avengers: Doomsday. It’s possible that the upcoming fight with Doctor Doom (Robert Downey Jr.) could be what causes or makes Professor X’s condition in Logan even worse.

There Would Be an Unfortunate Side Effect of Stewart’s Professor X From Before ‘Logan’ Featuring in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’

Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures

It would be interesting to see a story in Avengers: Doomsday that takes place before the events of Logan, but after Dark Phoenix. However, because Logan already happened, Professor X can’t realistically die in Doomsday. If he did, it would create a major continuity error, as he appears alive in Logan. This would essentially make Professor X untouchable throughout Doomsday, lessening the impact of any danger he faces. It’s a similar issue to Steve Rogers (Captain America) being shown as an elderly man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe – his death in Doomsday would create timeline problems.

The X-Men films have shown they aren’t hesitant to create alternate timelines and new realities based on major story changes. Similar to how Days of Future Past reset the X-Men universe, Professor X’s death in Avengers: Doomsday could do the same. This would allow the events of Logan to remain consistent, while still letting Patrick Stewart return to the role with higher stakes than simply surviving. If Professor X dies in Avengers: Doomsday and it’s the same character from Logan, it also raises interesting questions about how the events of that 2017 film would have unfolded without him.
