The marketing for the new Marvel movie, Avengers: Doomsday, has begun, and early glimpses suggest it will be one of the largest-scale MCU films yet. The story will be a massive, universe-spanning adventure bringing together heroes like The Avengers, Thunderbolts, Fantastic Four, and X-Men to fight Marvel’s biggest bad guy, Doctor Doom – played by Robert Downey Jr. This movie is the first part of a two-part story that finishes with Avengers: Secret Wars. Avengers: Doomsday has a lot to prove, needing to impress fans who haven’t been as excited about recent Marvel films and live up to the incredible success of Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has always taken inspiration from comic books, but Avengers: Doomsday has a unique opportunity to bring some of the most ambitious and unusual storylines to life. With its focus on the multiverse and multiple versions of the Avengers, this movie can explore moments that wouldn’t typically fit into a standard Marvel film – and that’s perfectly okay. After all, Avengers: Doomsday isn’t a typical movie, and it’s a time for bold choices. Here are some of the most exciting and unexpected comic book moments we’re hoping to see on the big screen.
Thor’s Daughter Love Is Captain Universe

Marvel Comics
When Thor: Love and Thunder came out, a lot of us fans started thinking that Thor’s adopted daughter, Love, might actually be the MCU’s version of Captain Universe. This character first showed up way back in 1979 in Micronauts #8, and it’s a really interesting concept. Captain Universe isn’t really a single person, but more like a power that merges with different hosts. Over the years, we’ve seen heroes like the Hulk, Doctor Strange, and even Spider-Man briefly become Captain Universe! The one thing all Captain Universes have in common is that they’re the Guardian of Eternity – basically, the living embodiment of that concept within the Marvel Universe.
Gorr’s wish brought Love back to life, connecting her to Eternity. Interestingly, a scene in Thor: Love and Thunder visually links her to the Egmia Force, a power similar to that of Captain Universe – a character who played a role in a recent Avengers comic series. This comic is influencing the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars movies. Now, with Doctor Doom targeting powerful individuals in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he might try to exploit Love’s link to Eternity, potentially turning her into Captain Universe and adding a new hero to the MCU.
Doctor Doom Rips Out Thanos’ Spine

Marvel Comics
A fast way for Marvel to establish Doctor Doom as the main villain is to show him easily defeating Thanos. The movies already proved Thanos was incredibly powerful by killing Loki and quickly overpowering the Hulk. A memorable moment from the comics, specifically Secret Wars #8, shows Doctor Doom ripping Thanos’s spine out – a scene that would instantly establish Doom as a terrifying threat.
Though it feels like something better suited for Avengers: Secret Wars, a powerful display of Doctor Doom’s abilities in Avengers: Doomsday would be a fantastic way to establish him as a major threat. Since Thanos is no longer a concern in the main MCU timeline, Doctor Doom could easily achieve this by confronting a different version of Thanos from another universe at the start of the film. This idea has been hinted at, especially by the impressive Doctor Doom-themed presentation at the Disney Showcase Expo in Shanghai.
Magneto and the Scarlet Witch: Father and Daughter

Marvel Comics
It’s still uncertain whether Elizabeth Olsen will return as Wanda Maximoff, also known as the Scarlet Witch, in Avengers: Doomsday. Although Olsen has stated she won’t be involved, Chris Evans previously said the same thing before agreeing to reprise his role as Captain America. Given that Avengers: Doomsday will include the X-Men and Magneto, many fans are hoping to finally see confirmation that Wanda Maximoff is a mutant and, more specifically, Magneto’s daughter – a storyline they’ve anticipated for years.
The upcoming film, Avengers: Doomsday, might include a version of Scarlet Witch with a history tied to the X-Men. For many years, she was known as the daughter of Magneto in Marvel Comics. However, Marvel changed their story in 2014, removing her and Quicksilver’s mutant origins to create distance between the comic book characters and their future appearances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as the film rights to the X-Men were then owned by 20th Century Fox. Now that Disney owns both Marvel and Fox, these characters can finally appear together. Avengers: Doomsday could potentially show Magneto and Scarlet Witch teaming up, a scenario that seemed unlikely for over a decade.
Mr. Fantastic Beats Up Namor

Marvel Comics
As a longtime Marvel fan, I’ve always been fascinated by the complicated relationship between Sue Storm, Reed Richards, and Namor. It’s well known that Namor has feelings for Sue, which definitely causes tension with Reed. While I understand Avengers: Doomsday has a lot going on, and Sue will understandably be focused on keeping her son, Franklin, safe, I’d love to see a little nod to that classic love triangle. Even just a brief confrontation between Reed and Namor would be a fun Easter egg for those of us who’ve followed the comics for years.
The upcoming movie, Avengers: Doomsday, is predicted to have plenty of action, and a fight between the Hulk and The Thing is a popular idea. While it’s not certain Mark Ruffalo will return as the Hulk, the confirmed returns of Pedro Pascal as Mister Fantastic and Tenoch Huerta as Namor make this battle more likely. This fight, inspired by a scene in Marvel Knights 4 #8, would highlight Reed Richards’ power and showcase his stretching abilities, something fans felt was lacking in The Fantastic Four: First Steps.
Cyclops Wields the Phoenix Force

Marvel Comics
Although Jean Grey is the most well-known user of the Phoenix Force, she isn’t the only Marvel character who can access its power. With neither Jean Grey nor the current Phoenix Force host, Echo, appearing in Avengers: Doomsday, many fans would like to see Cyclops (James Marsden) take on the power. In the comics, Cyclops once fully controlled the Phoenix Force during Avengers vs. X-Men and later attempted to wield it again in Secret Wars against God Emperor Doom, but wasn’t successful.
The trailer for Avengers: Doomsday, which focuses on the X-Men, shows Cyclops using his powerful optic blast – something he typically does when he takes off his visor. However, the extent of the destruction suggests several X-Men, possibly including Jean Grey, might die. In her final moments, Jean could transfer the power of the Phoenix Force to Cyclops. This would create a visually stunning scene, demonstrate Doctor Doom’s incredible power (even against someone with the Phoenix Force), and give Marvel Studios a fresh take on the Phoenix storyline, avoiding the mistakes of past films like X-Men: The Last Stand and Dark Phoenix. Hopefully, this will allow them to move past the Phoenix subplot and avoid revisiting it again in the Marvel Cinematic Universe anytime soon.
Doom Sentinels

Marvel Comics
I’m so hyped for the Avengers: Doomsday trailer! It looks like they’re hinting at the Sentinels showing up, and I spotted what looks like a massive foot behind Cyclops. Everyone’s buzzing about Doctor Doom potentially controlling them and going after the X-Men. Honestly, seeing the X-Men battle the Sentinels – especially in their classic comic book costumes, something the movies never gave us – would be incredible. But you know what would be even better? If those Sentinels were just giant Doctor Dooms! That would be unbelievably epic.
In the 2020 comic X-Men/Fantastic 4 #2, Doctor Doom builds his own Sentinels, designed to look like his signature Giant Doombots. These robotic duplicates are a frequent tool for Doom, serving as both his loyal assistants and a key part of his character that hasn’t been included in most movie adaptations. The Avengers: Doomsday storyline goes even further, featuring both Doombots and a massive Sentinel-Doombot hybrid. This showcases Doom’s arrogance and cleverly allows the Marvel Cinematic Universe to use a unique Sentinel design without overshadowing the planned X-Men introduction within the main timeline.
Franklin Richards Summons Galactus

Marvel Comics
In The Fantastic Four: First Steps, the Fantastic Four prevented Galactus from taking the infant Franklin Richards, who possessed immense power. Fans are eager to see a scene in a future film mirroring a moment from the 2012 Fantastic Four #604 comic, where the grown-up Franklin Richards actually brought back Galactus and controlled him as a herald – essentially commanding the powerful being himself. This would be especially exciting given Franklin Richards’ abilities were already apparent when he was just four years old, as shown in the post-credit scene of The Fantastic Four: First Step.

The idea of young Franklin Richards calling upon Galactus to protect him from Doctor Doom is incredibly exciting. It also neatly sets up a classic moment from the original 1985 Secret Wars storyline. In that story, Doctor Doom steals Galactus’s power to become strong enough to defeat The Beyonders—something he could repeat in Avengers: Doomsday before building Battleworld for the upcoming Avengers: Secret Wars. Considering Doctor Doom and Galactus are two of the Fantastic Four’s biggest enemies, Avengers: Doomsday should definitely show these two powerful figures facing off.
“He’s Captain America, I’m Just Steve Rogers”

Marvel Comics
The news of Chris Evans reprising his role as Steve Rogers in Avengers: Doomsday has sparked debate. While many fans are thrilled to see him return, others worry it undermines the current Captain America, Sam Wilson, portrayed by Anthony Mackie. Some believe Marvel is abandoning its new direction after Avengers: Endgame and relying on a familiar face instead of continuing to build something fresh.
Interestingly, the initial trailer for Avengers: Doomsday referred to “Steve Rogers” instead of “Captain America” returning. This suggests Chris Evans won’t be playing Captain America in the film. It would be fantastic if Marvel mirrored the famous comic book scene where Steve Rogers acknowledges Sam Wilson is Captain America, while he is simply “Steve Rogers.” This would firmly establish Sam Wilson as the MCU’s Captain America and show that Marvel hasn’t abandoned the character entirely.
