Avengers director reveals secret Marvel talks before surprise MCU comeback
Director Anthony Russo from the Avengers team has disclosed that confidential discussions happened prior to his unexpected return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
2022 saw the announcement that Phase 6 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) would draw to a close with two new Avengers films – previously known as Doomsday and Secret Wars. The directors, Joe and Anthony Russo, who led Infinity War and Endgame, subsequently confirmed their return for the fifth and sixth installments.
Previously, the Russos expressed that they considered Endgame as their final project within the Marvel franchise. However, during a conversation with Empire, Anthony Russo disclosed that the Marvel crew had been exchanging creative concepts since then.
The director remarked, “After Endgame, we reached a conclusion, and it took us a while to start viewing it as more than just an ending.
I have a strong relationship with Kevin, Lou [D’Esposito], and the rest of the Marvel Studios crew, and over time we’ve exchanged numerous discussions on various concepts. We’ve explored many ideas together,” he revealed.
After discovering a concept that sparked our curiosity, it eventually grew into the Secret Wars movie, as Russo clarified. In simpler terms, we stumbled upon an interesting idea, which later turned out to be the basis for the Secret Wars film.
It caught you off guard when it happened, and afterward, it seemed so fascinating that we should share its tale.
Initially, Joe Russo mentioned that there were several discussions before everyone settled on the project. In his words, “We had thoughts that we were struggling to grasp which came before this one, but we couldn’t find a suitable story for them.
I recalled speaking with screenwriter Stephen McFeely and suggested, “Hey, this might sound wild, but what if we revisit Secret Wars? What are your thoughts?
As a fan, I recall our conversation vividly. You emphatically said something along the lines of, “No way! Definitely not.” Then, the very next morning at precisely seven thirty, you called back with a new proposition, saying, “Okay, I’ve got an idea.
All four of the Avengers films can currently be streamed on Disney+. The next Avengers movie, Avengers: Doomsday, is set to hit theaters on May 1, 2026.
