Avengers Delays: Is the MCU Falling Apart?

Marvel Studios is making changes to its schedule again. It has been confirmed that Disney will postpone the premiere of its upcoming major Avengers movies – Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. Both films have now been moved back by seven months from their initial release dates.

The release date for “Avengers: Doomsday” has been changed from May 1, 2026, to December 18, 2026. And guess what? Its sequel, “Avengers: Secret Wars,” which was originally set to premiere on May 7, 2027, is now scheduled for a release on December 17, 2027.

The news is a part of Disney’s broader restructuring of its theatrical lineup for upcoming plays. In this reshuffling, various unnamed Marvel productions initially slated for February 13, 2026, November 6, 2026, and November 5, 2027, have either been cancelled or renamed as generic “Disney” projects. As a result, Avengers: Doomsday and Spider-Man: Brand New Day now stand as the only officially confirmed Marvel Cinematic Universe releases in the 2026 calendar year.

At this point, it’s unclear if “Spider-Man: Brand New Day”, a Sony collaboration within the MCU, will reschedule its premiere to fall between the two upcoming Avengers films. Initially, this positioning was supposed to fill in the storyline gap between “Doomsday” and “Secret Wars”, similar to how “Captain Marvel” linked “Infinity War” and “Endgame”.

Currently, it’s undecided whether Sony will stick to their initial schedule for the release of their games, or if they’ll make changes due to Disney pushing back their own releases.

Following the release of “Fantastic Four: First Steps” on July 25, 2025, Marvel Studios will have a significant gap in their theatrical schedule until “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” scheduled for July 31, 2026. This means that fans will have to wait over a year for the next Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film if Sony doesn’t push back “Brand New Day” into 2027 to keep it between the two “Avengers” films. In this case, there won’t be another MCU release until “Doomsday” in December 2026, which is nearly a year and a half after “Fantastic Four” hits the screens.

Since the film “Spider-Man: Far From Home” and “Black Widow”, there has been the longest gap in Marvel’s theatrical releases, similar to the period during the 2019-2021 lockdown when no new movies were released.

Disney currently holds tentative release dates for unnamed Marvel movies scheduled for February 18, May 5, and November 10 in the year 2028. At this point, we don’t have any definite details about which movies will occupy those slots.

The delay coincides with remarks made earlier this year by Disney CEO Bob Iger, who admitted that the company needed to reduce production pace and reorient its Marvel sector for better focus.

In order to improve the quality of their films significantly, Iger suggested that Marvel should streamline their output and concentrate more intensely on film production.

Regardless of any setbacks, “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Secret Wars” are anticipated to be colossal collaborative ventures. In these upcoming productions, Robert Downey Jr. reprises his role as an alternate version of Tony Stark, who takes on the character of Doctor Doom. Additionally, characters from “Thunderbolts,” “Fantastic Four,” and the Fox “X-Men” films will be featured, with Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen coming back to play Professor X and Magneto respectively.

The work on “Doomsday” is progressively intensifying, as evidenced by Robert Downey Jr.’s recent appearance in a social media post, where he was seen with other cast members watching a “Thunderbolts” movie screening, expressing their solidarity for the Marvel ensemble films.
