Avengers 5 gets new title with unexpected Robert Downey Jr return

As a longtime Marvel fan, I was beyond excited to hear that Robert Downey Jr is returning to the MCU for not one, but two upcoming Avengers movies: “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars.” This news came as a complete surprise during Marvel’s Comic-Con 2024 panel.

Avengers 5 has a new title, but that’s not the real news: Robert Downey Jr is back.

Instead, he won’t be back as Iron Man, but will take on the character of Victor Von Doom, known as Doctor Doom, in “Avengers: Doomsday”.

“After removing the Doctor Doom mask on stage, Downey Jr expressed, ‘A new disguise, but the role remains the same.’ He enjoys acting out intricate character parts.”

The Russo brothers, Joe and Anthony, have been officially announced as the directors for both “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars.” In these films, Robert Downey Jr. will portray the character of Doctor Doom.

During Marvel’s Comic-Con 2024 event, Kevin Feige, the head of Marvel Studios, made an unexpected announcement. He unveiled that the casts of “The Fantastic Four” and “Captain America: Brave New World,” in addition to those of “Thunderbolts,” would make appearances in their respective upcoming films.

Fans weren’t shocked by the news that the Russo brothers would be back as directors, as reports had surfaced earlier this month about their potential return. However, it was Downey Jr’s appearance at the panel that came as a pleasant surprise to many.

In April 2024, Downey Jr said that he would “happily” reprise his Iron Man role.

Before the Russo brothers became involved once again with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, they expressed some doubts. “I’m not sure how they would manage that,” Anthony mentioned, “and I’m uncertain about the path leading there.”

Well, it seems they worked something out.

The production of Avengers 5 has faced some bumps in the road. Originally helmed by Destin Daniel Cretton, he departed the project in November 2023. In his place, Michael Waldron stepped in as writer, taking over from Jeff Loveness at the same time.

After Jonathon Majors was let go by Marvel in December 2023, news emerged in February 2024 that the film, initially named “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty,” would no longer use that title.

Avengers: Doomsday will be released in cinemas on May 1, 2026.
