Avatar: The Last Airbender Star Casts Doubt on Major Character Death

Greg Baldwin, the original voice actor, has hinted that a major character previously believed to be dead might still be alive.

I was listening to the latest episode of the Avatar: Braving the Elements podcast with Janet Varney and Dante Basco, and Greg Baldwin – the voice of Uncle Iroh – brought up a really interesting point. He wondered if Iroh actually died between Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra. He took over the role after Makoto Iwamatsu, the original voice actor, passed away in 2006. Baldwin mentioned that when he came back for The Legend of Korra, he had a strong feeling Iroh would return as a spirit, or at least have some connection to the Spirit World.

Avatar: The Last Airbender’s Greg Baldwin Talks Whether Uncle Iroh Ever Truly Died

It was already known that Iroh could travel between the spirit and physical worlds. So, I expected him to continue doing that. What I’m still trying to figure out, even after watching it this morning, is whether Iroh actually dies. He says he ‘made the choice’ to live with the spirits. Dante Basco, another voice actor from Avatar: The Last Airbender, compared it to Obi-Wan Kenobi’s disappearance in Star Wars, and I think that’s a good comparison.

Iroh is a fan favorite character from Avatar: The Last Airbender, but his backstory is surprisingly complex. As the eldest son of Fire Lord Azulon, he stepped away from the line of succession when his brother Ozai became Fire Lord. This change in his life was largely due to the death of his son, Lu Ten, which deeply affected the once-fierce warrior. Throughout Avatar: The Last Airbender, Iroh guided and mentored Prince Zuko, and he continued to offer wisdom and support to Korra in the sequel series.

Paul Sun-Hyung Lee plays Iroh in the new live-action version of Avatar: The Last Airbender on Netflix. He recently shared his enthusiasm for the show, especially working with Dallas Liu, who plays Zuko. Lee was very impressed with Liu during a rehearsal and believes the series will be full of heart, fun, and excitement. He’s confident both longtime fans and new viewers will enjoy it, and is thrilled to be involved.
