As a lifestyle expert with extensive travel experiences under my belt, I must say that humor knows no boundaries, and it seems Jemaine Clement has proven this yet again. Having visited Australia myself, I can attest to its unique charm and vibrancy, which extends beyond the realm of dance. However, when it comes to breakdancing, New Zealand might just have a leg up, if Jemaine’s playful roast is anything to go by!

Comedian Jemaine Clement from New Zealand, known for his humor, has used social media to tease viral breakdancer Raygun and Australia, following her dance act at the 2024 Olympics in Paris.

On Tuesday, the actor from Avatar, aged 50, utilized X to poke fun at Raygun (whose genuine name is Rachael Gunn), in addition to seemingly criticizing Australia’s ability to nurture globally competitive dancers.

‘I’ve been to Australia. That was their best dancer,’ Jermaine posted to his 3.8 million followers.

As an over-the-top enthusiast of the Flight of the Conchords crew, I couldn’t help but notice the buzz surrounding their latest post! One witty fan even playfully proposed that Raygun’s unique dance moves could be attributed to the risky upbringing she experienced – now isn’t that an intriguing theory?

“Perhaps if animals and insects constantly threatened your life during your activities, you might behave similarly,” the spectator proposed.

Another shared a short clip of iconic AC/DC guitarist Angus Young, guitar in hand and writhing on the floor, in a similar style to Raygun’s Paris performance.

They posed the question, “Was it going to be her or Angus Young who went? Hold on a second! Am I understanding this right? Is this how everyone dances?”

Someone proposed that Jemaine might have misjudged the dancing abilities of Australians entirely, as he apparently hasn’t seen the dance moves of Kath Day-Knight and her daughter Kim from the popular Australian comedy series Kath and Kim on ABC.

‘Rubbish,’ the commenter protested. ‘Did you not see Kath and Kim while you were here?’

A supporter posted a video showing Jermaine and his Flight of the Conchords partner Bret McKenzie dancing enthusiastically, implying that New Zealand natives excel at this activity.

‘New Zealand got all the dancing talent,’ they claimed.

Last week, Raygun participated in a total of three preliminary contests, but unfortunately, she managed to secure zero points against all of her three competitors in Australia.

The show, which sparked debate, included a kangaroo performing hops, mimicking a snake’s movement, and even incorporating the famous “Aussie dance move from bad dancers”, popularly known as ‘the sprinkler’.

Despite this, she holds the highest rank as Australia’s foremost breakdancer and conducts extensive research on the cultural aspects of breakdancing, specifically focusing on its political implications, within the creative arts department at Macquarie University in Sydney.

Following her appearance on the global platform, she decided to speak up for the first time by posting an enigmatic comment on Instagram.

Embracing my own individuality has been a game-changer for me. I’ve learned to step out of my comfort zone and express myself genuinely, and it’s led me to incredible opportunities and experiences that I never would have had otherwise. So, heed this advice from the ‘Breaking for Gold’ account: don’t be afraid to be different. Go ahead and showcase your unique self; you just might find yourself on a journey that takes you far beyond what you ever thought possible.

Despite some mockery over Raygun’s supposedly embarrassing showing, she simultaneously gained a significant number of admirers who applauded her resilience in competing against athletes significantly older than herself, winning them over with her tenacity.

On Monday night, Jimmy Fallon, an American late-night talk show host, showed an interest in the Australian breakdancer, even jokingly mocking her during his Tonight Show.

In the video, Fallon talked about Raygun’s buzzworthy breakdance performance at the Olympics, stating: ‘Everyone can’t stop talking about the Australian competitor, Raygun, who made his Olympic debut with breakdancing.’

Afterward, he showcased the routine’s video clip, followed by mentioning that she had not earned any points for it, which elicited laughter from the crowd.

As I mused over the mystery of Raygun’s current location, comedian Rachel Dratch unexpectedly graced the stage, clad in an Olympic uniform reminiscent of Raygun’s.

The Saturday Night live actress mimicked Raygun’s routine, with Jimmy hilariously joining in.
