Avatar: Fire and Ash sets unwanted record as it’s called “mind-numbingly boring” by critics

Okay, so the new Avatar movie, Fire and Ash, is coming out this Friday, and honestly, the early reviews are kinda all over the place. It’s a bit of a bummer because it’s the third movie in the series, following The Way of Water which came out three years ago, and it looks like this one might not be hitting the mark with everyone. It’s actually gotten some pretty mixed reactions, which is a first for these films!

After initial reviews came in, the newest movie received a 71% ‘Fresh’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 153 reviews. This makes it the lowest-rated film in the Avatar series to date.

Okay, so the first Avatar movie still reigns supreme with an 81% approval rating, which is awesome. The Way of Water isn’t far behind at 76%. But honestly, I’m seeing more reviews pop up all the time, so I wouldn’t be surprised if Fire and Ash‘s score goes up a bit. It’s still early days!

What to Read Next

Okay, so I read a review in The Nightly (AU), and honestly? It wasn’t bad, just… incredibly boring. Like, fall-asleep-in-your-chair boring. The reviewer actually said they were thinking about their grocery list while playing – that’s how little it grabbed their attention. It wasn’t offensive or the worst game ever, just… painfully dull.

Critics found the movie visually stunning, but ultimately disappointing. Both The Gate and The Film Maven highlighted the impressive visuals, but criticized the story as repetitive and lacking focus, and the characters as underdeveloped and unengaging.

Little White Lies offered a more upbeat take, noting that while some viewers might find the film’s sincere, somewhat naive approach repetitive, it’s this very quality – combined with impressive visual effects – that makes the story feel genuine and prevents it from being a purely commercial endeavor.

Digital Spy gave Avatar: Fire and Ash three stars, praising its impressive visuals as a five-star cinematic experience, but noting that it truly shines when viewed in 3D. The review also pointed out that the story is somewhat repetitive, which may become more noticeable when watching it again outside of a 3D cinema.

Sigourney Weaver, the star of the film, has described it as “jaw-dropping.” In an interview with DS, she said the movie felt like a thrilling ride from the start, adding that returning to the world of Pandora – with all its flying, diving, and swimming – was a fantastic experience.

Avatar: Fire and Ash is released in cinemas on 19 December.
