“Avatar: Fire and Ash” topped the weekend box office charts, earning a strong $88 million in the U.S. and Canada during its debut.
Wow, the new “Avatar” movie is a huge hit! It made around $345 million worldwide already, with most of that – about $257 million – coming from theaters outside the US. It’s crazy to think the movie cost at least $350 million to make, but it seems like it’s already on its way to earning that back!
Industry experts predicted the latest movie would perform well internationally, especially because the previous film, “Avatar: The Way of Water,” was very popular in countries like Germany, France, and China.
The film debuted in China with approximately $57.6 million, making it the second-biggest opening weekend for an American movie there this year, following Disney’s “Zootopia 2.” “Zootopia 2” ultimately earned over $271.7 million in China and more than $1.1 billion worldwide.
China’s positive reaction to this movie shows that some films can still succeed there. While China was once a major reason for the success of big-budget blockbusters and animated family films, its enthusiasm for American movies has decreased recently, due to political factors and the growing popularity of Chinese-made films.
Angel Studio’s animated film, “David,” earned the second-highest spot at the box office this weekend, bringing in around $22 million domestically. “The Housemaid” from Lionsgate, “The Spongebob Movie: Search for Squarepants” from Paramount and Nickelodeon, and “Zootopia 2” completed the top five movies.
The strong box office numbers this weekend are probably welcome news for movie theater owners, who have had a very up-and-down year.
Honestly, the year started really rough at the box office. The first few months were a struggle, but then we got a little boost with fun surprises like “A Minecraft Movie” and “Sinners” in the spring. Summer was pretty uneventful, though. Things were looking bleak heading into fall, and the theater owners were getting worried! Thankfully, closer to Thanksgiving, “Wicked: For Good” and “Zootopia 2” finally brought people back to the cinemas, which was a huge relief.
