Disney has already signaled plans for Avatar 4, as James Cameron originally envisioned a four-movie sequence for the Avatar sequels. However, Cameron recently indicated that the fourth movie isn’t definite and will depend on various factors.
He’s confident that Avatar: Fire and Ash will be profitable, but wonders if it will be successful enough to warrant further sequels. He stated in late November 2025 that if this movie is the end of the series, he’s happy with that, and would consider writing a novel to wrap up any remaining storylines, even though filming for the first part of the movie had already begun.
It’s still uncertain if Avatar: Fire and Ash was financially successful enough to warrant another sequel, but let’s imagine it was. Here’s what we know about Avatar 4.

Avatar 4 release date: When can we expect Avatar 4 in cinemas?
I’m a huge Avatar fan, and I just saw the latest news! Avatar 4 is officially coming out on December 21st, 2029. It was originally planned for December 18th, 2026, but got pushed back a bit in June 2023. And good news doesn’t stop there – Avatar 5 is already scheduled for December 19th, 2031! I’m already counting down the days!
As we discussed earlier, filming for the fourth movie has already begun. Because the story will jump forward in time, the filmmakers wanted to shoot scenes with the younger actors while they were still filming the second and third movies, ensuring continuity.
According to James Cameron, filming for the third movie happened alongside the live-action parts of Avatar: The Way of Water. They even started filming some scenes for the fourth movie during this same period, because the younger characters will age significantly between the third and fourth films, as he told People magazine.
We’ve already filmed the beginning of the story. We’re now planning to film the scenes where the characters return after a six-year gap. We’ll begin working on those scenes once the third installment is released.
James Cameron is planned to direct both Avatar 4 and Avatar 5, but their production isn’t certain. Even if the movies are officially greenlit soon, he might not start filming the fourth one right away.
Honestly, after how well things are going, some people are suggesting we just skip ahead and start working on Avatar 4 and 5 right away. I’m thinking I could maybe figure out a way to film them with some breaks in between so I can squeeze in another movie later. But another idea is just to power through those two Avatar films and worry about everything else when I’m much older, like when I’m eighty! It’s a tough call.

Avatar 4 cast: Who’s coming back for Avatar 4?
Since filming has already included the younger actors – Britain Dalton, Jack Champion, Jamie Flatters, Trinity Jo-Li Bliss, and Bailey Bass – we can anticipate seeing them return in Avatar 4.
We don’t have confirmation on the rest of the cast yet, so we’re basing predictions on who survived in Avatar: Fire and Ash. Be warned: the following contains spoilers, so stop reading if you haven’t seen the movie!

While most characters survive in Avatar: Fire and Ash, the ending features a couple of significant deaths. Ronal (played by Kate Winslet) is fatally wounded during the final battle, but she’s able to deliver her baby before passing away.
Then, Quaritch (Stephen Lang) appears to sacrifice himself to save Spider, falling to what seems like his death. However, since Quaritch has died before, it’s likely we haven’t seen the last of the character – we might see a recreated version of him in the next film.
Lang said he’d definitely be interested in continuing his work on the Avatar series if there’s another chapter in Quaritch’s story. He described the project as incredibly fulfilling and shared that Avatar will always be a significant part of his career, as he told Digital Spy.
Most of the main characters are still alive, meaning we’ll likely see the familiar faces of Sam Worthington as Jake Sully, Zoe Saldaña as Neytiri, Sigourney Weaver as Kiri, Giovanni Ribisi as Parker Selfridge, Jemaine Clement as Dr. Ian Garvin, and others return.
The film Avatar: Fire and Ash featured Oona Chaplin as Varang, the leader of the Ash People, and she’s expected to be back in future installments. David Thewlis, who played Peylak, the leader of the Wind Traders, and was also new to the Avatar franchise, will likely return as well.
Michelle Yeoh is set to join the series as Dr. Karina Mogue, and has already filmed her scenes for the upcoming movie, pending its official confirmation.

Avatar 4 plot: How does Avatar 3 set up the next movie?
Unlike many sequels that end with unresolved questions, Avatar: Fire and Ash brings the story started in the previous film to a satisfying conclusion. By the end, the Na’vi have once again defeated the RDA, Quaritch is defeated for good this time, and Jake and Neytiri and their family have fully integrated into the Metkayina clan.
One interesting storyline for the future involves Spider’s ability to breathe on Pandora without needing oxygen. Kiri saves him when he’s in danger, and this discovery – a human being able to breathe on the planet – has definitely gotten the attention of the RDA, who are still trying to colonize Pandora.
We can expect to see these characters again, including Spider’s father, Quaritch, but it’s not yet known how Avatar 4 will continue their story, or if it will at all. The next film will begin a new narrative, unfolding over two movies, similar to how Avatar: The Way of Water and Avatar: Fire and Ash told a single, complete story.
Director James Cameron revealed that the third Avatar movie concludes the current storyline for the Sully family. He explained to the Crew Call podcast that the fourth and fifth films will launch a completely new, large-scale story if he gets to make them. “If I do get to make 4 and 5, that becomes one new kind of epic story.”

Avatar 4 trailer: Any Avatar 4 footage yet?
Unfortunately, we won’t be seeing anything from Avatar 4 anytime soon, despite some initial filming. The first trailer for Avatar: Fire and Ash wasn’t released until July 2025, and that was still five months before the movie actually came out.
Avatar: Fire and Ash is out now in cinemas. Avatar 4 is scheduled for release on 21 December 2029.
