Predictions for how well ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash‘ will do in theaters are getting better, but current estimates suggest it might not reach the same high financial success as previous films in the ‘Avatar’ series.
How did Avatar: Fire and Ash perform at the box office?
Recent reports from The Hollywood Reporter show that Avatar: Fire and Ash is doing well at the box office and gaining momentum. While it hasn’t reached the mark yet, experts predict it will soon become only the third U.S. movie released in 2025 to earn over $1 billion – joining Zootopia 2 and Lilo & Stitch in achieving that success.
While the film is performing well, The Hollywood Reporter predicts it probably won’t reach $2 billion at the box office, unlike other movies in the Avatar series. Current estimates suggest it will likely finish between $1.5 and $1.8 billion.
Although the latest Avatar film has earned a significant $1.8 billion worldwide, it’s performing below its predecessors—the first Avatar made $2.9 billion, and the sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water, earned $2.3 billion—which could impact the franchise’s future. Director James Cameron has stated that further installments depend on continued financial success. With a reported budget of around $400 million, ‘Fire and Ash’ needs to gross nearly $1 billion just to cover its costs.
Cameron hasn’t said exactly how much money “Fire and Ash” needs to earn for future installments, but he emphasized that making it was very expensive.
Cameron told IGN in November that the movie was incredibly expensive to make. He explained they’d need to earn twice that amount just to break even. While he’s confident the film will be profitable, he’s unsure if it will earn enough to warrant a sequel.
The next Avatar movie, currently without a title, is planned for release on December 21, 2029, and some filming has already taken place. A fifth film is tentatively scheduled for December 19, 2031. However, it’s still uncertain whether either of these movies will actually come out.
