I recently heard Oona Chaplin, who’s in the new Avatar movie, talking about how she’s thought a lot about whether being Charlie Chaplin’s granddaughter has helped her career. She definitely thinks he was a genius, but she also admits that her family name probably opened some doors for her. It’s a tricky thing to think about, right?
The actor signed on for the third movie in James Cameron’s sci-fi series, playing the villain Varang. Varang will join forces with Colonel Quaritch (Stephen Lang) to fight Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and his family.
Although she’s built a successful acting career with roles in shows like Game of Thrones and Taboo, Chaplin admitted to The Times that she sometimes feels she doesn’t quite deserve her success, considering the famous legacy of her grandfather.

Honestly, it’s been tough getting to a point where I feel like I earned my success. I know some opportunities came my way because of who I’m connected to – a really talented guy – and it’s weird feeling like I might not fully deserve where I am. It’s a tricky feeling, for sure.
Chaplin initially felt weighed down by the legacy of her famous family name, but she changed her perspective. She realized that while she could never match her grandfather’s achievements, she could find fulfillment by working hard and appreciating her own path.

I’d be content if people remembered me simply as Charlie Chaplin’s granddaughter, and that prompted them to discover and enjoy his incredible films. He was a true genius, and sharing his work would be enough for me.
Although what happened to Varang was unclear at the end of Fire and Ash, Chaplin will definitely be back for the next movie in the series, which is scheduled to be released in 2029.
A central element of Fire and Ash is the connection between the characters and Quaritch. As Lang explained to Digital Spy, they have a strong, almost instinctive connection, recognizing a shared nature in each other.

It’s rare for Quaritch to instantly connect with someone he sees as a kindred spirit. This is likely why he initially admired Jake – he recognized a similarity in them.
I believe Varang exists in a world that Quaritch finds strangely comforting. While it’s a world filled with conflict – the Ash People’s camp feels like a proper battlefield – that’s exactly where Quaritch thrives and feels at home.
Avatar: Fire and Ash is in cinemas now.
