Avatar 3 & 4 Timeline Gap Revealed by James Cameron

James Cameron has revealed when the events of Avatar 4 will occur following Avatar: Fire and Ash. Since the first Avatar film premiered in 2009, the franchise has grown into a detailed and lively world largely focused on the Sully family. Surprisingly, a significant amount of the fourth movie has already been filmed, despite the fact that Avatar 3 hasn’t come out yet.

James Cameron on when Avatar 4 takes place in the timeline

In a recent in-depth conversation about his work, the Academy Award-winning director shared that eight years will pass between the events of ‘Avatar: The Seed Bearer’ and the start of ‘Avatar 4’.

James Cameron explained to Vanity Fair that filming the second and third movies was a long process. Unlike voice work for animated films, which can be done quickly, everything the actors did on screen took a significant amount of time. The actors worked for a total of 18 months to complete both films, roughly nine months of performance capture for each one.

Cameron explained that filming wasn’t done in order. They’d shoot a scene from Avatar 2 one day, then a scene from Avatar 3 the next, and even some from Avatar 4. This was because the characters age roughly eight years between the end of Avatar 3 and the beginning of Avatar 4.

James Cameron explained they filmed certain scenes for Avatar 4 knowing the young actors wouldn’t be children when they returned to set. He wasn’t sure when they’d finish filming the rest of the movie, but emphasized the need to release the first three films and earn revenue first.

The first two Avatar films are among the highest-grossing movies ever made, so it’s reasonable to expect the remaining parts of the series will be filmed.

The next Avatar movie, titled Avatar: Fire and Ash, will be released in US cinemas on December 19, 2025. Avatar 4 is currently scheduled to follow on December 21, 2029.
