On Tuesday morning, Michael Hill International Limited announced his demise, issuing a tribute-filled statement to both the ASX and NZX in honor of the renowned jewelry designer and benefactor.
With deep regret, Michael Hill International Limited shares the news of the passing today of our founder and non-executive director, Sir Michael Hill.
Sir Michael was widely recognized for his exceptional work as a jeweler, his successful business ventures, his generous charitable contributions, and his unwavering dedication as a loving father and husband.
Together with his wife Lady Christine, he established and expanded Michael Hill Jeweler, starting from modest roots in Whangarei, New Zealand, into an internationally recognized jewelry brand with locations in Australia, New Zealand, and Canada.

He died at his family home in Arrowtown, on New Zealand’s South Island.
In 1979, Hill opened his initial jewelry store in Whangārei, paving the way for a worldwide retail empire that boasts numerous outlets.
Today, the brand operates 287 stores across Australia, New Zealand and Canada.

Globally, his jewelry business was valued at more than AUD 700 million, while his own personal wealth was approximately AUD 300 million.
Hill was knighted in 2011 for services to business and the arts.
He is survived by his wife Christine and their two children, Mark and Emma.
