Australian pop star Vanessa Amorosi’s dramatic court battle against her mother hits delay – after singer won their property dispute

As a seasoned observer of human dynamics, I find myself deeply moved by the tale of Vanessa Amorosi and her mother, Ms Robinson. The intricacies of their relationship, marked by love, trust, and eventual discord, are a poignant reminder of the complexities that can arise within families, even those in the limelight.

The planned transfer of two properties from Vanessa Amorosi’s mother to her has been postponed following a heated legal dispute between them.

In 2021, the Australian pop star, aged 43, filed a lawsuit against her mother, Joyleen Robinson, seeking sole ownership of two properties acquired through her career success. These properties were held in a trust with both women named as owners.

In a significant court ruling this month, Ms. Amorosi was declared as the sole proprietor of two properties because the judge determined that there was no valid “kitchen deal” regarding ownership, as it was claimed.

Yet, it appears that the transfer of management for the two properties belonging to Ms. Robinson is being postponed, as her legal team is still in discussions over the contractual terms and determining who should shoulder the court expenses.

On August 8, Supreme Court Justice Steven Moore allowed both parties a fortnight to collaborate on creating orders, designed to impact his decision in a manner that remains manageable for all involved.

However, during the Supreme Court hearing on Wednesday, Joel Fetter, counsel for Ms. Amorosi, mentioned that discussions had taken place, yet no settlement had been achieved.

He told the court both parties were requesting another week to see if they could ‘come to an agreement’.

Justice Moore consented to the plan, however, he cautioned that he would issue the orders if there is no resolution regarding the transfer of the property by the time the case comes up in court next Wednesday.

If they fail to reach an agreement about those plans, it falls on me to issue instructions to carry out the court’s decision, he explained.

I recommend that the involved parties engage in meaningful conversation, aiming to find a workable compromise.

Disputed were an eight-hectare semi-rural property located in Narre Warren, Melbourne’s southeast, and the house where Ms. Amorosi currently resides in California.

Ms. Amorosi stated that the money, amounting to $650,000, which was utilized for purchasing the house in Narre Warren back in 2001, originated from a trust established to collect all her earnings as a musician and composer.

Instead, Ms Robinson claimed that Ms Amorosi consented to transferring complete ownership of the house in Narre Warren only upon receiving a payment of $650,000 as requested.

She stated that the deal was struck back in February 2001, during a chat held in the kitchen of their old household we used to share.

In 2014, Ms. Robinson stated that she gave $710,000 to Ms. Amorosi as a part of a loan on her U.S. property. She emphasized that she met her obligations according to their housing agreement.

However, Ms. Amorosi asserted to the court that since no agreement had been made, she should hold sole ownership.

As a die-hard devotee, I can’t help but share my excitement about the singer’s ambition – she yearns to claim full ownership of her cherished Californian abode, a property that she acquired through a trust fund lovingly established by her dear mother.

This month, Justice Moore decided that the so-called kitchen deal was nonexistent, making it rightful for Ms. Amorosi to solely own the property in Narre Warren.

He also found that Ms Amorosi should be the sole owner of her Californian home.

Nevertheless, Justice Moore concurred that Ms. Robinson was entitled to restitution from Ms. Amorosi for the part she had contributed towards her property back in 2014.

On his 43rd birthday, the judge ruled that Ms. Amorosi must pay her mother a total of $650,000, along with an additional $219,486.33 as accrued interest.

On Thursday, Ms. Amorosi was absent from court due to her continued stay in the United States, awaiting Justice Moore’s ruling.

Ms Robinson was also not in attendance, although some of her family members watched on in court.

In March 2021, Ms. Amorosi initiated a legal dispute by filing a lawsuit at the Supreme Court, targeting Mrs. Robinson.

Over a five-day court hearing in October, both Ms. Amorosi and her mother provided testimony. The artist occasionally paused to regain her composure and wipe away tears during the proceedings.

At the judge-only trial, the court was told the mother and daughter fell out in 2015.

Ms. Amorosi found herself in a difficult situation when she was compelled to part with her house close to Los Angeles due to not being able to fulfill the mortgage payments.

She informed the court, “It became clear to me that I would end up losing the property due to all the chaos around it. Despite my attempts, I couldn’t find out the reasons behind this situation.”

I requested Ms. Robinson to demonstrate where the funds were used, to which she replied, “I’ve already spent everything and you need to return home and get back to work.”

Ms. Amorosi asserted that she thought her mother managed her financial affairs during her teenage years, generously spending the substantial sums of money she earned in the early 2000s.

However, Ms. Robinson informed the court that all her actions were driven by her daughter’s best interests and were based on the counsel of an accountant that Ms. Amorosi’s manager had suggested.

She shared that her daughter and herself had always been incredibly close, with financial concerns never arising between them… What she cherished most was her deep affection for her daughter, a sentiment that remains unchanged, but it is this enduring love that leaves her heartbroken.

18-year-old Ms Amorosi shot to stardom in 1999 when her first single, “Have a Look,” was released. This song achieved gold status in Australia.

In the year that followed, she found global acclaim through her first studio album titled “The Power” and graced the stage at the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

The song “Absolutely Everybody” by her was widely adopted as an informal theme for the Games and later achieved significant success in Australia, Europe, specifically in the United Kingdom and Germany.

Her combined album and single sales have surpassed two million worldwide.
