A growing trend on social media involves Australian celebrities sharing unfiltered photos of themselves, embracing their natural ageing process and going makeup-free.
The trend started when 68-year-old actress Rachel Ward faced a lot of criticism online for showing her bare face.
Oh my gosh, it’s amazing! After Rachel went makeup-free, other celebs are doing it too! I was so excited to see Rebecca Gibney, the host of Millionaire Hot Seat – she’s 61, can you believe it?! – posting makeup-free selfies on Monday to show her support. It’s just… incredible to see them embracing natural beauty like this!
I was scrolling through social media and getting overwhelmed by negativity, fake content, and unrealistic portrayals of people’s lives. Then I found photos from @rachelwardofficial, and it was a welcome relief.
I’ve been following Rachel and @thegoodfarm.shop for a while, and I love seeing genuine people and everyday life. So, I decided to share a real, unedited photo of myself – even with my sun-damaged skin, quirky hair, and the results of too much styling!
Thinking about her life as an actress, she realized that performers are constantly changing and adapting to stay current. But she found that the best part of getting older is letting go of the need to please everyone else and understanding that your own opinion is the only one that truly matters.
Bec Hewitt, known for her role on Packed To The Rafters, received a lot of positive feedback from her fans. Media personality Deborah Hutton, 64, was among those praising her, writing, ‘God love you Bec! Always keeping it real.’
Celebrity reporter Angela Bishop, 58, simply wrote ‘Beautiful always,’ and 7 News anchor Angela Cox commented ‘Gorgeous’.
Rachel Ward even expressed her approval, commenting: ‘Thanks Rebecca. Lovely post. Big hug.’
A day later, former Home and Away star Debra Lawrence, 69, shared her own makeup-free post.
She shared a natural, makeup-free photo of herself, captioning it, ‘Following a post by the wonderful @rebeccagibney_, here’s my face as it is at 69 years old.’
‘Changing the algorithm one pic at a time. Let’s do this ladies.’
It comes after Rachel Ward hit back at nasty trolls who criticised her appearance.
As someone who follows celebrity lifestyles and wellness trends, I was really disheartened to see the negativity directed at Rachel Ward late last year. She shared a video about Farmthru, her wonderful project focused on ethically sourced meat, and unfortunately, it drew a lot of unkind comments. It’s tough when someone tries to champion a cause they believe in and faces that kind of reaction, but I admire her for putting herself out there!
One person commented that they read the woman is 68, but she appears much older, especially considering the commenter is 62 and only a few years younger. Another user bluntly asked what happened to her appearance, noting she used to be very attractive.
Another critic claimed that Rachel’s appearance was due to ‘years of neglect’.
Many people rushed to support Rachel, with one commenter writing, “Seriously, these comments are awful – she’s always been beautiful and is doing fantastic work.”
Rachel responded to the criticism of her appearance in the video, saying she felt bad for those who were being critical.
‘Thanks, you dear lady, coming to my defence,’ Rachel wrote.
You know, I often think about women who really struggle with getting older. It’s a shame, honestly. What they don’t realize is that letting go of the pressure to stay young and ‘beautiful’ is incredibly liberating. It’s like a weight lifts, and you finally feel truly free to just be. It’s the ultimate freedom, really.
It was a good experience, but there’s a whole world of other things to discover. You’ll only understand those joys when you experience them yourself.
