Aussie star looks completely unrecognisable in rare television appearance as she reveals why she walked away from Hollywood at the height of her career
As someone who has spent years immersed in the fast-paced world of Hollywood, I can only admire and respect Yael Stone’s decision to put her values above her career. Her commitment to climate action is inspiring, especially considering she gave up her green card and life in America to do so.
A well-known actress from Australia, who chose to step away from the limelight, recently made an uncommon return to TV for a candid discussion about her surprising choice.
Yael Stone, famously recognized for portraying Lorna Morello in the acclaimed Netflix sitcom “Orange Is The New Black,” decided to leave her acting career behind in 2019 and move back to Australia to focus on combating climate change.
In reaction to the 2019-2020 wildfire season in Australia, the actress decided to relinquish her U.S. permanent residency and move back there permanently to join the battle against climate change, which she referred to as a “climate war.
Each Monday, I found myself reflecting on a transformative moment in my life, as shared during an episode of Australian Story. At around 39 years old, I came to recognize that a significant shift took place in our relationship with Jack Manning Bancroft, many years after the fact. It was then that we both understood our aspirations were strikingly similar.
She admitted, speaking to ABC, that it’s likely some folks might view her choices as potentially damaging to her career, given a slightly reckless or self-destructive angle.
‘I think a lot of people be like, “This lady is cuckoo.” But you have to make the choices you can live with.’
2020 marked a significant turning point for me, as I embarked on a thoughtfully deliberated journey that led me to let go of my American lifestyle.
As a conscientious lifestyle guide, I’ve realized the moral dilemma of leading a life spanning across two nations, given the knowledge we now possess. In a recent communication, I expressed this journey as an environmental injustice due to its impact on our precious planet.
In her statement, Stone expressed that the amount of carbon emitted during flights is ethically questionable and simply wrong.
“I am about to initiate the procedure of relinquishing my green card and bidding farewell to a life in America. Instead, I will be focusing my efforts on contributing positively within Australia. The moment is upon us.
After gaining extensive experience in the Australian theatre scene, Stone garnered two Sydney Theatre Awards. Then, in 2011, they relocated to New York.
In 2008’s Sydney Theatre Awards, she received accolades as both the Best Newcomer and Best Supporting Actress, thanks to her outstanding portrayal in The Kid.
Stone also starred in Australian dramas All Saints and Spirited.
Stone is a vocal advocate for several causes, including women’s rights and environmentalism.
The actress and her partner Manning Bancroft have been together after reconnecting in 2016.
They share daughters Pemau Stone Bancroft, six, and Marli, two.
Manning Bancroft is the founder of Indigenous mentoring program AIME ‘to alleviate inequity’.
