Aussie singer reveals the staggering cost of wearing a MAGA hat in social media post - and why she did it

As a lifestyle expert with extensive experience in the music industry, I must say that Hayley Mary’s actions and words resonate deeply with me. Having spent years navigating the complexities of the entertainment world, I understand the pressures to conform and the importance of staying true to oneself.

A well-known rock musician from Australia, known for her band, responded to the severe backlash that ensued following her Instagram post where she was seen sporting a ‘Make America Great Again’ hat, which is associated with former U.S. President Donald Trump.

Last week, Hayley Mary, the frontwoman of The Jezebels, posted a selfie wearing the contentious red hat as a means of generating attention and voicing her opposition to Australia’s Misinformation Bill.

However, the 37-year-old’s post backfired, igniting outrage within the Australian music industry.

‘Firstly, the MAGA hat was for shock value,’ she wrote in a separate post.

Let’s face it, if not for an engaging approach, a write-up on Australia’s Misinformation Bill might have gone unnoticed due to the general perception that politics, apart from exceptional cases like Trump, can be quite uneventful.

The artist, who is successful in her own solo endeavors, alleges that she feels “canceled” and has lost friendships due to the negative response she’s received.

She shared with the Herald Sun, “The aftermath was exactly as one might expect. It seems unlikely I’ll continue my music career in the same form as before.

Although I’ve temporarily misplaced some friendships, I remain optimistic that it’s just a passing phase. Sadly, parts of my business have crumbled, such as the loss of publicity, band members, staff, an event, the launch of my album, income streams, and a significant number of followers.

Hayley stated that disseminating details about the bill could be risky to a point where she was willing to put her career at stake.

In a subsequent post, she expressed that there is a strong possibility of losing friends and financial repercussions, but she has been suppressing her voice for too long within the overly sensitive music industry. She feels this self-censorship wears on one’s spirit, more so now as she recognizes that her passive stance allowed a controversial law to slip in unnoticed.

‘So yeah, cancel me and cancel my shows is you like. I don’t care enough to keep up the facade.

Why bother with rock ‘n’ roll if it ends up being controlled by the departments of truth and propaganda anyway?” or “Is there any point to rock ‘n’ roll when it needs to pass through the hands of truth and propaganda agencies?

As an ardent fan, I’m absolutely smitten by the electrifying Sydney-hailed rock ensemble known as The Jezabels. This band of musical virtuosos first took shape back in 2007, with Hayley at the helm as our captivating lead singer, Sam Lockwood strumming the guitar like a maestro, Heather Shannon enchanting us with her melodious piano and keyboard skills, and Nik Kaloper keeping the rhythm steady on drums and percussion.

The band went on indefinite hiatus in 2017, but reunited for a tour in 2022.

In 2016, they put out their latest album titled Synthia, following their successful release of the ARIA award-winning album, Prisoner, in 2012, and the multiple-nominated album, Dark Storm, in 2011.

Back in 2016, I was heartbroken when my beloved band, The Jezebels, had to scrap their global tour because Heather needed urgent care due to her long-standing battle with ovarian cancer.

The remaining members of the band opted against carrying on the tour without their fourth colleague, and they informed their fans about this choice instead.

In the year 2013, Heather received a diagnosis for a relatively uncommon form of ovarian cancer. Despite this, she had managed to fulfill her tour obligations in the past.
