Aussie fans mourn Mod Squad star Michael Cole after his death aged 84 and recall his infamous drunken Logies appearance
As a child of the ’60s and ’70s, I grew up with the iconic TV series “Mod Squad” shaping my adolescent years. Michael Cole, who played Pete Cochran, was undoubtedly one of the coolest cops ever on television. His passing has left me with a sense of nostalgia that feels like an old friend has bid farewell.
Fans across Australia have been expressing heartfelt tributes following the death of Michael Cole, a beloved star from the Mod Squad, who passed away at the age of 84.
On Tuesday morning, the last surviving American actor from the 1960s police drama, known for his iconic role, passed away.
After hearing the unfortunate news, his admirers swiftly turned to social media platforms to express heartfelt messages about the celebrity and reminisce about his time spent on The Mod Squad series.
As a devoted admirer, I can attest that, beyond his illustrious career, he left an indelible mark on Australians for a different reason altogether. They often recall him as the man who delivered one of the most memorable moments in Logie history, frequently hailing it as one of the ‘greatest ever.’
As a leading lifestyle guide, I find myself often reflecting on pivotal moments that have shaped our cultural landscape. In 1973, I was part of history as the individual who pioneered the broadcasting of an unprecedented word – ‘s**t – during a live telecast, in a moment that encapsulated the raw reality of a car crash.
I couldn’t help but feel a pang of disappointment when my heartfelt words were omitted from the replay during another broadcast that very same week, leaving over 2,000 Australians and myself reminiscing about what was originally said.
Reflecting on the memorable occasion following his demise, a devoted fan affectionately penned down: ‘Farewell Michael Cole. Offered one of the most unforgettable Logie moments ever.’
A different Australian commented: ‘Farewell Michael Cole, often remembered by numerous Australians for his use of a strong word during the Logies.’
Fans, in a broader sense, reflected on the times when X was part of The Mod Squad series, as they paid their respects using what is commonly known as Twitter today.
As a child, I used to watch The Mod Squad. They all seemed so amazing back then. RIP Michael Cole, one person shared on Twitter.
Another penned: ‘Rest In Peace Michael Cole the cool hip star of the hit TV series The Mod Squad!’
A third commented: ‘He was my favourite…..and I watched it every week…. R.I.P Michael Cole….’
While another added: ‘The 3 coolest cops ever…Pete, Julie and Linc together again. RIP Michael Cole.’
On Tuesday, Michael’s close associates announced his passing in a statement, sharing that he departed this world tranquilly, with those dear to him nearby.
They commended the actor, known for portraying Pete Cochran in the popular crime drama The Mod Squad, for leading a lively and fulfilling existence.
During that period, Cole’s unique abilities and captivating personality truly stood out, making him a significant icon of the time.
As a devout admirer, I can’t help but acknowledge that The Mod Squad was instrumental in cementing my fame as a common name. Beyond that, this groundbreaking show dared to tackle themes of racial and social justice, shattering barriers and paving the way for meaningful conversations. My portrayal in the series added an authenticity and emotion that resonated deeply with viewers.
‘Beyond his career, Michael Cole will be remembered for his warm and generous spirit.
He’s admired by friends and family for his quick wit, captivating charm, and endless kindness, filling every space he stepped into with happiness.
With a born storyteller’s spirit, he possessed an uncanny ability to make people around him feel unique and valued, frequently spinning tales from his glamorous Hollywood past or imparting insights gleaned from his extraordinary life’s odyssey.
Though we mourn his departure, his artistic achievements and unending kindness guarantee that his spirit will continue to thrive.
In my personal life, I’m fortunate to be surrounded by the love and support of my current spouse, Shelley Funes, whom I wed in 1996, as well as my cherished offspring from my earlier marriages.
A cause of death has not been given at this time.
Michael was born in Madison, Wisconsin, in 1940 and started out his acting career in the mid 1960s.
Following stints in productions such as Gunsmoke, Chuka, and The Bubble, he achieved his major breakthrough in Hollywood by portraying Peter ‘Pete’ Cochran, a covert law enforcement agent, on The Mod Squad.
The show aired for five seasons from 1968 to 1973.
In the same cast, he worked with Peggy Lipton and Clarence Williams III. Regrettably, Peggy Lipton passed away in 2019, and Clarence Williams III followed suit in 2021. However, it’s worth noting that Clark was the only surviving star from The Mod Squad at the time of this writing.
In 1990, he played the adult Henry Bowers in the mini series adaptation of Stephen King’s It.
Apart from that, he had a role as Harlan Barrett on General Hospital, and his most recent acting appearance was in the 2008 television film titled “Grave Misconduct.
In his 2009 autobiography, entitled “I Played the White Guy”, he provided an honest reflection on his multi-decade journey in the film industry.
