Aussie comedian and 1% Club host Jim Jefferies breaks his silence after he was yelled at by audience member over Donald Trump joke
As a seasoned comedy enthusiast with years of attending live shows under my belt, I must say that Jim Jefferies’ recent encounter with a belligerent audience member in Perth was nothing short of extraordinary. The audacity of some people to pay for a ticket to a stand-up show and then take offense at the very essence of comedy is truly baffling.
Australian comedian Jim Jefferies has addressed his confronting encounter with a heckler last week.
On the opening night of his Give ‘Em What They Want tour, the 47-year-old comedian performed in Perth. However, a disruptive individual had to be escorted out by security during the show.
On The Project, airing on Channel Ten on Friday, Jefferies humorously suggested that the man seemed to be affected by an illegal drug.
‘We get hecklers at every show,’ the outspoken comedian said during the interview.
‘It just so happens that that fellow was on ice… I could sugar coat it.’
Jefferies then joked: ‘[Ice] actually does look like sugar doesn’t it?’
In a more serious vein, the 1% Club host then explained he was not sure what ‘set him off’.
According to Jefferies, the event started immediately following his light-hearted comment regarding the U.S. Presidential elections.
While under the spotlight, Jefferies casually mentioned Donald Trump, President Joe Biden, and Vice-President Kamala Harris. This action prompted someone in the audience to shout, “Choose your allegiance!” or simply, “Pick a side.”
Jefferies stated that subsequently, he observed the man rise – only to trip and fall forward, nose-first. Upon regaining his stance, the well-liked Australian spectator remarked that the heckler seemed to have blood on his face.
As a lifestyle expert, I’d rephrase that sentence like this: During my recent visit to HBF Stadium, an overzealous attendee approached the stage while Jefferies was performing, causing a disturbance. Unfortunately, due to his actions, security had to escort him out of the venue for everyone’s safety and enjoyment.
According to radio host Robbie Von Klitzing, who recorded the occurrence on his phone and shared it online, he initially found it amusing, but things soon took a turn for the worse.
‘Jim Jefferies, he was making some gags about Donald Trump, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris,’ he said.
At this moment, it turned out that someone from the audience disagreed strongly – almost instantly, we could make out a voice shouting ‘F’s’ and ‘C’s’ in the background. Looking around, we spotted a man who had risen to his feet, gesticulating wildly, clearly upset.
Later on, Jefferies retaliated verbally against the heckler, making the disagreement even more heated.
After that, the experienced comedian thought it wise to let the upset man express his anger for a while, which might help cool the situation down.
But the man picked that moment to suddenly stay silent.
In that moment, I found myself silent for just a brief instant, then, without uttering a word, the spotlight shifted back to Jim who began speaking once more. This was my account of the situation.
…”Now, someone from the audience began making his way towards the stage… If an opportunity arose, he seemed ready to engage in conversation with Jim Jefferies.”
In response, security stepped in just as the man was about to approach closely, and escorted him out of the premises instead.
According to Von Klitzing, he simply knocked the man down, and then security had to escort him away. It was quite astonishing!
As the man was escorted out, Jefferies confronted him again, exclaiming, “Once you can hire a full team of ten bodyguards, then you’ll be able to battle me. I have more security than Donald Trump Jr. himself!”
On several occasions, spectators have attempted to throw punches at Jefferies due to his actions that they had paid for – making jokes.
Two individuals were the initial ones to accomplish this feat, and both were successful. Remarkably, one of them was captured on video performing the action at The Comedy Store in Manchester, England back in 2007.
If you search for ‘Jim Jefferies punched’ online, you’ll find out how people react to me when I get heckled, as he shared on Sunrise in May.
As a performer with a few battle scars to show for it, I can attest that stage confrontations, though rare, do happen. I’ve been lucky enough to have only been punched twice during my career, but unfortunately, only one of those incidents was ever captured on film. Dealing with hecklers is an art form in itself, and I must admit, I’m not the most skilled at it. Each experience has taught me valuable lessons about resilience, humor, and staying cool under pressure. It’s all part of the job, and I wouldn’t trade these moments for anything else.
There was a lot of support online for Jefferies after the latest objection to his jokes.
I can’t help but chuckle when I hear about someone spending a fortune to enjoy a comedy show, only to take offense at a joke. As someone who’s been in the audience for numerous stand-up performances, I’ve learned that humor often pushes boundaries and sometimes crosses the line. It’s all part of the fun! If you can’t handle a few risqué jokes or off-color remarks, perhaps comedy isn’t the best entertainment choice for you. Save your hard-earned dollars for something more suitable to your taste.
One person questioned, “Why do Trump supporters exhibit such violent behavior?” Another wondered, “Could it be due to a lack of education as Trump often praises the uneducated? Or could it be an emotional issue instead?”
‘Anyway that fool paid good money to see a show and then the genius got himself kicked out.’
Jefferies’ tour is continuing to Newcastle, Wollongong, Sydney, Canberra, Brisbane and Townsville.
