In a recent conversation, Aubrey Plaza opened up about her feelings of loss, following the untimely demise of her partner, Jeff Baena, earlier in the year.
In early January 2022, the husband of Aubrey, whom she married in 2021, tragically took his own life at the age of 47. It was subsequently disclosed that they had separated four months prior to his passing.
Speaking candidly in a chat with my cherished friend Amy Poehler on her Good Hang podcast, she acknowledged: “It’s important to address the elephant in the room first, as people are genuinely interested in your wellbeing and adore you. Unfortunately, this past year has been exceptionally challenging and heartbreaking for you.
After losing your husband, you’ve been navigating through this difficult time and searching for various avenues of comfort and emotional assistance.
In the here and now, when Amy inquired about my emotions, I shared that I am elated to be in your company. Generally speaking, I’m managing well and keeping up with life’s rhythm. Every day brings new challenges, yet I feel blessed to navigate them. I’d say I’m holding my own, but it’s an ongoing battle.

She continued: “Initially, this analogy might seem rather silly, even comical at times, but let me assure you, it holds a serious intention for me. Have you ever watched the film ‘The Gorge’? It has an otherworldly feel to it, maybe something featuring Miles Teller as an alien…
In the film, there are steep cliffs on both sides, with a deep chasm between them inhabited by terrifying creatures eagerly pursuing the characters. When I viewed it, I was genuinely startled…
As a lifestyle expert, I often find myself drawing parallels between complex emotions and natural landscapes. In the case of grief, I liken it to standing on the edge of an immense, stormy sea. The ocean represents the overwhelming feelings of sorrow and despair that seem perpetually present, just beyond my grasp yet ever-looming. Despite the distance, I can feel its power and see its turbulent waves crashing against the shore – a constant reminder of the grief that’s always lurking nearby.
At times, I find myself yearning to immerse myself fully, feeling one with it. Other moments pass by as I merely observe its presence, and occasionally, I attempt to distance myself. Yet, no matter where I go or what I do, it remains constant.
The Gorge – A 2025 Film
In this upcoming film set for release in 2025, Miles Teller, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Sigourney Weaver take the lead roles. The movie’s plot goes as follows: Two skilled agents are assigned to watchposts on opposite ends of a clandestine, expansive gorge.
Preserving the globe from an enigmatic danger hidden among us, they collaborate to safeguard the secrecy nestled in the ravine.”
In this paraphrase, I’ve aimed to use more descriptive language and a conversational tone while maintaining the original meaning. The phrase “Protecting the world from a mysterious evil that lurks within” has been rephrased as “Preserving the globe from an enigmatic danger hidden among us,” which communicates the same idea using slightly different words. Similarly, “They work together to keep the secret in the gorge” has been paraphrased as “they collaborate to safeguard the secrecy nestled in the ravine,” using a more natural and easily readable phrasing.
In a new conversation with Amy, she opened up about her grief for the first time, having initially only mentioned his passing in a brief statement, which was conveyed by a representative: “This loss is hard to fathom. We’re incredibly thankful for all the kindness and support we’ve received.

‘Please respect our privacy during this time.”
