Astralis handed ‘joke’ of a fine by ESIC for br0 emergency substitution

As a longtime fan and follower of the CS:GO scene, I must admit I am deeply disappointed with the recent decision made by ESIC regarding the Astralis emergency substitution issue at BLAST Fall Final. While I understand that organizations have a responsibility to protect their players’ health, the way this situation was handled raises more questions than answers.

The Danish org were issued a fine for the emergency substitution, but is it enough?

The Danish esports team, Astralis, has been penalized by the Esports Integrity Commission (ESIC) for the matter concerning the emergency replacement during the BLAST Fall Final held in September.

As Alexander “br0” Bro, I found myself stepping aside from the active roster of Astralis before the big event due to an unexpected medical situation. The team needed a quick adjustment, so they brought in Casper “cadiaN” Møller as our new in-game leader, moving up his debut with us.

As a dedicated fan, I found myself in a state of intrigue when Broich, Br0’s agent, declared on X/Twitter that he was fit and raring to go, stirring up quite a buzz. This announcement, made just before BLAST locked the rosters for the event, ignited controversy over Astralis being permitted to make a substitute.

That investigation concluded today — and many were unhappy and perplexed by the results.

Early exit at BLAST Fall Final prompted a reduced sentence, according to ESIC

In a nutshell, the comprehensive 12-page report revealed that ESIC found that BLAST approved Astralis’ substitution request without proper verification, and subsequently, ESIC based their conclusions on their own investigations directly.

The ESIC pointed out that Astralis failed to address or clarify the confusion in BLAST’s validation process, which, in turn, seemed to benefit Astralis without them immediately rectifying the misunderstanding or miscommunication, according to the commission’s statement.

Consequently, the commission has imposed a fine of $15,000 USD on Astralis, which they will donate to the Danish Mental Health Foundation (Psykiatrifonden), a charity chosen by ESIC. In addition to this penalty, Astralis is required to relinquish the prize money they won from the tournament – an extra $10,000.

Astralis expressed regret that ESIC’s verdict did not address the employer’s responsibility to safeguard staff during delicate circumstances. In their official statement, they acknowledged the decision but continued to stand by their assertion that their actions adhered to the relevant Danish labor regulations.

It’s understandable that the penalty forfeiting prize money is acceptable, but many people are upset by ESIC’s final comments. The commission claims that bro’s replacement didn’t significantly alter the tournament result since Astralis didn’t advance past the group stage.

“Disband [and] leave your jobs”: Community weighs in on soft ruling

Many think the penalty is too lenient and fails to deter teams from repeating the same actions in the future. Commentator Michael “YouM3” Cassidy suggests a more severe punishment, like losing future Valve Ranking points, would be fitting.

“Imaging using tournament results in your decision-making — you are a joke at this point,” caster Dustin “dusT” Mouret said. HLTV journalist Luis Mira was also frustrated that results at the tournament made an impact on the decision. “It’s the principle and the exploitation of riles that should matter,” he said on X (formerly Twitter).

Other critics were particularly harsh about the results, with FURIA’s captain, Gabriel “FalleN” Toledo, sharing similar views: “Step down from your positions – withdraw from our community,” he stated.

Bro continues to be part of the Astralis lineup, but the team has virtually concluded their competitive year following their elimination in the Shanghai Major RMR tournament.
