Assassin's Creed Shadows' Stealth Will Enable Naoe to Hide in the Darkness and Execute Double Assassinations

As a seasoned gamer with years of stealth-based gameplay under my belt, I couldn’t be more excited about the upcoming Assassin’s Creed Shadows! The focus on Naoe’s shinobi skills and the emphasis on tactical stealth gameplay is music to my ears. The removal of the eagle drone might seem like a step back, but the new ‘Observe’ mechanic looks promising. I can already imagine the strategic planning sessions as I tag enemies and monitor their movements.

Ubisoft has divulged numerous aspects regarding the stealth features in “Assassin’s Creed Shadows,” a key element considering your role as a covert ninja within part of its narrative. The other segment involves you commanding a powerful samurai character, naturally. Ubisoft has unveiled a wealth of information about the stealth elements in “Assassin’s Creed Shadows,” which will be crucial given that you’ll be controlling a ninja for part of the storyline. Additionally, you’ll also manage a formidable samurai warrior throughout the other portion.

In the latest information, stealth plays a significant role, primarily emphasizing the skilled ninja Naoe, although the samurai Yasuke is also involved. Previously, the eagle drone in Assassin’s Creed was available for Bayek in Origins, but it has been removed now. Instead, players will have to rely on their character’s senses and engage enemies in a more tactical, moment-by-moment approach, as stated by Associate Game Director Simon Lemay-Comtois in a detailed article discussing the stealth gameplay of Shadows.

The eagle’s role is now replaced with a new ‘Observation’ feature, allowing you to strategize your next actions by marking lootable stashes, collectibles, quest objectives, and even enemies for tracking. Additionally, this feature lets you monitor the movements of tagged enemies, and from a Sync Point, you can scrutinize nearby areas in detail.

In addition, Naoe is equipped with Eagle Vision, which allows her to discover hidden locations and detect enemies even behind walls, ensuring she doesn’t blunder into a room filled with samurai unprepared. Moreover, given that this is the game titled ‘Shadows‘, you’ll be thrilled to know that Naoe can blend into the shadows, even extinguishing light sources such as lanterns with precise shuriken throws.

In daylight, Naoe is an adept shinobi, as Lemay-Comtois points out; however, darkness amplifies her abilities significantly, particularly when the difficulty level increases. Notably, she possesses a distinct advantage over her adversaries in the dark. As for stealth, Naoe’s steps become less audible when she crouches and moves slowly, especially on noisy Nightingale Floors.

For the first time in “Assassin’s Creed”, characters such as Naoe and Yasuke will have the ability to take a prone position. When prone, they can roll in any direction or carry out an assassination from the ground. Items like shinobi bells for distraction, as well as shuriken, kunai, and smoke bombs, are among the tools available for Naoe during combat.

In this game, you have the ability to seize and move opponents, conceal corpses, and non-hostile Servant NPCs will alert adversaries if they notice you. Whistling attracts enemies towards you, and engaging in combat with a samurai is a serious matter. While swift assassinations are an option, as in other modern Assassin’s Creed titles, there are varying levels of assassination damage you’ll inflict on stronger opponents. However, if you wish, you can enable a setting in the menu to carry out instant-kill assassinations consistently throughout the game.

As a fan, I’ve noticed that the color of an assassination prompt can significantly impact the outcome. For instance, a white prompt signals an immediate kill, whereas yellow suggests some damage will be dealt, and red means the enemy will thwart your attempt. In terms of assassinations, it’s all about understanding the context and enhancing your skills. Invest in perks that boost your assassination power, then experiment with different tactics: A tough opponent might resist a frontal attack, but could succumb to a stealthy air assassination.

Naoe can carry out a two-fold assassination by using her concealed blade in conjunction with a Tanto knife, while Yasuke can employ stealth tactics by attacking unsuspecting enemies from behind or by employing his bow and arrows for long-range attacks. Further details about Yasuke’s combat techniques will be discussed in another Ubisoft analysis.

On February 14th, 2025, the latest installment of Assassin’s Creed Shadows will be available on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC. This release coincides with a battle pass offering free content for players to enjoy. The videos below offer a glimpse into the game’s intriguing stealth mechanics.
