Ash’s Age Puzzle
Regardless of how much time passes, the initial Pokemon anime will continue to be a vital part not just of the entire Pokemon series, but also the broader world of anime. Ash Ketchum, the long-standing main character, is one of the most well-known animated characters globally, largely due to his frequent appearances with Pikachu, the cherished symbol of the Pokemon franchise. Over the years from 1997 to 2023, their joint journey has enthralled audiences worldwide.
As a dedicated Pokémon fan, I still can’t get over the final season of the original anime series. Ash finally claimed the title of World Champion in the World Coronation Series, an incredible achievement! Yet, there’s one aspect of Ash’s journey that leaves fans scratching their heads – even today. You see, unlike the rest of us who grow older with each passing year, Ash seems to have found the Fountain of Youth during his travels. But wait, it gets even more intriguing! Despite only a single year of training under his belt, Ash managed to secure the World Champion title. Now, that’s something I can’t help but marvel at!
Ash Ketchum’s Beginnings & Journey Across the Pokémon World
Ash Once Knew Very Little About Pokémon Battling
Grew up in the charming Pallet Town, I, Ash Ketchum, was mostly nurtured by my wonderful mom, Delia. My dad, whose actual name remains a mystery, is said to be a Pokémon Trainer – a title that eluded him, making him scarcely visible even to me. The tales spun around my father sparked an insatiable curiosity within me about the thrilling realm of Pokémon battles. By the time I turned ten, the thought of receiving my very own starter Pokémon from Professor Oak filled me with exhilaration!
Unfortunately for me, I sleep right through the day when kids my age are being gifted their very first Pokémon from Kanto, missing out on the usual trio of starters. However, Professor Oak has one more Pokémon hidden away in his lab: Pikachu, a feisty and willful Electric-type creature that’s about to join my adventure!
For most of his life, Pikachu lived freely in the wilderness. It wasn’t until very recently that he evolved and was caught by Professor Oak. Still not accustomed to human interaction, Pikachu isn’t particularly happy about teaming up with a new Trainer right away. In an attempt to avoid working with Pikachu, the novice Trainer, Ash, decides to capture another Pokémon instead. Unfortunately, this leads him to unintentionally provoke a wild Spearow, a common and rather irritable bird-type Pokémon.
In short order, Ash and Pikachu discover themselves fleeing a swarm of Spearow. During the chase, Pikachu sustains an injury. As the aggressive Spearow prepare to assault the duo, Ash steps in front of Pikachu, safeguarding his companion. This act of bravery prompts Pikachu to retaliate with a strong Thunderbolt against the birds. Following this encounter, Pikachu and Ash manage to communicate on a deeper level, leading them to function harmoniously as teammates.
Even with Pikachu by his side, Ash would find that Pokémon battles still presented a challenge for the aspiring trainer. It wasn’t just about having Pikachu; Ash needed to capture a diverse range of Pokémon as well. Furthermore, he had to understand how each type of Pokémon interacted with one another in order to utilize their strengths and weaknesses effectively during battles.
Fortunately, Ash made friends with Brock and Misty, both Gym Leaders who had personal aspirations and Pokémon partners. This marked the beginning of Ash’s future escapades in regions beyond Kanto, as he would be accompanied by a group of travelers who would stand by him throughout his journey, and he for them. Over time, Ash would find himself mentoring new trainers and their Pokémon, sharing the wisdom he had accumulated during his travels.
Ash’s Final Pokémon Battle & Its Aftermath
Leon Is Defeated by Ash in the World Coronation Series
By the time Ash reached Galar, he had journeyed far from his initial days as a Pokemon Trainer in Kanto. Despite being merely 10 years old, he had garnered recognition across numerous regions, even leaving an impression on some of the present Champions within the Pokemon world. The dynamic nature of the Pokemon universe is primarily driven by Pokemons, particularly battles. Everything orbits around Pokemon Trainers to such an extent that those not engaged with Pokemons often find themselves in the periphery of the limelight.
Becoming a highly respected Pokémon Trainer or Coordinator is quite challenging, particularly when managing numerous strong Pokémon. This journey demands extensive training and navigational skills across various terrains over many years. Those who excel beyond their fellow trainers may attain positions like Gym Leaders, Elite Four members, or even Champions. However, there are Trainers who have gained recognition through years of training, while others, such as Ash’s father, may find it difficult to gain widespread acclaim despite their efforts.
In just about a year, Ash has transformed into an impressive Trainer against all odds. It was evident he was growing by leaps and bounds when he reached the Sinnoh region, particularly with a Pokemon who had a troubled history with a previous Trainer. In Kalos and Alola, Ash built two of his strongest teams yet, filled with Pokemon friends that will never be forgotten. His team for the World Coronation Series included not just Pikachu, but also a diverse range of Pokemon from Galar and beyond.
In Galar, Ash’s unique team includes Sirfetch’d, a development of Farfetch’d, and Dracovish. On the other hand, his new Dragonite and Gengar friends are related to Pokemon species originating from Kanto. Prior to hatching into a Riolu, Ash cared for an enigmatic Egg. Once hatched, their connection facilitated Riolu’s evolution into Lucario, typically found in Sinnoh and Kalos. During their time in Galar, Pikachu and Gengar mastered the power of Gigantamax. Later on, Lucario utilized the popular Mega Evolution mechanic, thanks to the team’s voyages to the Kalos region.
Observe here: The World Coronation Series was no walk in the park; it attracted numerous well-known trainers from various regions. To my surprise, I found Ash alongside, a familiar face and a renowned Dragon-type Trainer hailing from Unova, Iris. But what truly caught my attention was the presence of Lance, the reigning Champion from Kanto and Johto. Other Champions, such as Diantha, Steven Stone, and even the legendary Cynthia joined the fray. However, none could claim the top two positions in this grueling competition.
In the epic showdown, Leon, ruler of the Galar region, faced off against none other than Ash Ketchum. Remarkably, even after defeating both Steven Stone and Cynthia, known for their extensive Pokémon training experience, Ash emerged victorious. These triumphs, culminating in Ash’s ultimate victory over Leon, are undeniably moments of jubilation, yet they also leave us perplexed. How could Ash have become the Monarch after just a year of Pokémon training? Furthermore, one might wonder why the narrative progression unfolds this way, with Ash seemingly perpetually 10 years old.
How Does Ash’s Journey Compare to the Pokémon Video Games?
Ash’s Adventure Mirrors That of Another Pokémon Trainer From Pallet Town
A plausible explanation for why Ash never seems to age and consistently wins numerous victories in a short period (wins that typically take most trainers years to achieve) is that Ash embodies the original Pokemon hero. Before the introduction of Ash and the first Pokemon anime, the franchise originated from the initial Generation I games. Players are allowed to follow Red, the silent yet resolute protagonist, as he and his long-time rival, who goes by Blue (or Green, depending on the translation), receive their first Pokemon from Professor Oak himself.
Red’s narrative and persona often vary based on the format (with his personality being noticeably more dynamic in the Pokémon Adventures manga), yet consistently, Red demonstrates great compassion and determination that make him a remarkable figure in the battling realm, earning respect from many Trainers even to this day. In fact, he has made appearances in games beyond Generation I as well.
In contrast to Ash’s adventures, Red’s storyline and occasional appearances in later games can create more complexity when talking about his travels. It appears that Red may have spent around a year exploring the Kanto region and eventually becoming its Champion, as depicted in the games and manga. However, it is believed that only three years or less have passed since then according to the Generation II games. Due to his intense focus on training, Red has been out of sight for quite some time, even from his own mother, making him a bit of an enigma at this point.
In Pokémon Black 2 and White 2, Red could be a potential adversary, but he doesn’t seem to age until Generation VII. Accompanied by Blue, they are touring Alola, having been summoned for the Battle Tree. At this point in time, both characters have grown into young adults. However, this contrasts significantly with Ash’s storyline, making it rather confusing. It is widely recognized that after Red was crowned Champion of Kanto, he continued his travels to various other regions for an extended period, a fact also supported by the Pokémon Adventures manga.
Despite following in Red’s footsteps by exploring new territories, Ash managed to do so in less time somehow, which remains a mystery. This intriguing aspect has sparked speculation among fans as to whether Ash will show up in “Pokémon Horizons: The Series.” Will he appear as an older Trainer, or will he remain forever 10 years old? The last we saw of Ash and Pikachu was them embarking on a fresh journey, a voyage that has left fans puzzling ever since.
