Ashlee Simpson recalls ex-boyfriend’s cruel insult as she looks back on bullying she faced in early 2000s

Ashlee Simpson is reflecting on a difficult period when an old boyfriend reportedly made hurtful comments about her weight, which happened during the early 2000s.

The 40-year-old vocalist, marking two decades since the release of her debut album “Autobiography,” delved into a challenging recollection during an episode of the podcast series titled “Pod Meets World.

In conversation with Danielle Fishel, Rider Strong, and Will Friedle (previously known as Boy Meets World stars), Ashlee shared insights into her songwriting methodology and the motivations behind the hits in her critically acclaimed album. She even revealed an unkind remark from a past relationship that contributed significantly to the music’s creation.

‘I had a boyfriend that was like, “You look fat, you need to get on the treadmill!”‘ she claimed.

Ashlee responded that when she heard the insult, her first reaction regarding what she’d express on her upcoming album was: ‘Prepare yourself for what I am going to share.’

The mother of three, wedded to Evan Ross, contemplated revisiting difficult life events as a source of inspiration for her successful music.

She mentioned that her daily writing was like a journal, reflecting her experiences following a recent breakup and her relationship with her new boyfriend.

Ashlee’s album Autobiography was an unprecedented success for her upon its release in July 2004.

The album was first released during the same timeframe as her MTV reality show, The Ashlee Simpson Show, which ran for two seasons between June 2004 and March 2005.

The autobiography ultimately received a triple-platinum certification from the Recording Industry Association of America, signifying sales of over three million copies. However, its commercial triumph was eclipsed by her notorious mistake on Saturday Night Live.

On October 23, 2004, it was discovered that the singer was miming to a pre-recorded track on a famous comedy program, as her band accidentally played a different song and her prerecorded vocals were broadcast instead, despite her not appearing to sing.

Overwhelmed with surprise due to the error, Ashlee responded uneasily by performing an impromptu line dance, just as the network swiftly switched to a commercial break.

Instead, she eventually attributed her choice not to perform live to a severe case of acid reflux, resulting in the loss of her voice.

During last Thursday’s podcast, she shared her thoughts, stating, “During that period, to be frank, the bullying was overwhelming. Yet, that doesn’t imply I didn’t compose those songs.
