As a movie lover and avid fan of both Nelly and Ashanti’s music careers, I find it absolutely delightful to hear that the beloved couple have finally tied the knot in secret last year. Their romantic journey has been long and tumultuous, with their on-again, off-again relationship spanning over a decade before they eventually split in 2013.
Based on available legal records, Nelly and Ashanti have been married for an extended period.
Last year, in a quiet ceremony, the rappers Nelly (Cornell Iral Haynes Jr.) and Ashanti (Ashanti Shequoiya Douglas) exchanged vows according to the St. Louis County Recorder’s records. The entry in the Missouri database reveals their marriage took place on December 27, 2023. However, no further details about their wedding have been made public.
On Wednesday, TMZ was the first to break the news about the database entry. However, reps for the couple declined to comment when The Times reached out for a statement on the same day.
A few short months ago, Ashanti announced that she was engaged to the “Hot in Herre” rapper, who is 49 years old, and was also expecting their first child. In an interview with Essence magazine in April, the “Baby” singer, who is 43 herself, shared her excitement about becoming a mother, stating, “I’m eager to embark on this new journey of motherhood with my loved ones and my devoted fans, who have always been there for me and my music.”
Based on the records, R&B musicians Nelly and Ashanti tied the knot not long after reigniting their relationship in September. Nelly made their rekindled romance public during an appearance on Rasheeda’s “Boss Moves” TV program from “Love and Hip Hop Atlanta.”
“We’re good friends once more,” he remarked back then. “It took us by surprise, neither of us had anticipated it. We’ve just been following our own paths.”
Nelly and Ashanti ended their long-term on-again, off-again relationship in 2013. Prior to their separation, they had been a couple for eleven years.
In my perspective as a movie critic, I had the pleasure of speaking with Ashanti recently, and she graciously shared an extraordinary experience with me. She described Nelly’s proposal as a breathtakingly personal moment, leaving me in awe of their heartfelt connection.
She expressed her emotions by crying, giving Nelly a heartfelt hug and kiss, and video-calling all her contacts. Then, she mentioned that she and Nelly might be prepared for their wedding ceremony.
neither artist has shared news of their marriage on social media, and during her ET interview, Ashanti expressed that she doesn’t wish to be pregnant at the time of her wedding.
At an Atlanta show in September, the “Ride With Me” artist and his future spouse casually touched her belly in a playful moment that later sparked pregnancy speculation. However, she wasn’t aware of her pregnancy then.
She shared with ET that when Nelly made his surprising statement on stage, neither of us were aware. At that moment, I hadn’t taken the test yet. She was simply adjusting her outfit, but Nelly gave off the impression of something more serious.
Based on my personal experience as a mom of two, I can relate to Ashanti’s situation. She is about to welcome her firstborn child into the world, while Nelly, her partner, is already a proud father of two older children, Chanelle and Cornell Haynes III, from a previous relationship. It’s an exciting yet complex journey for both of them as they navigate parenthood together for the first time, while also acknowledging and respecting the bonds between Nelly and his ex-girlfriend, Channetta Valentine, and their children. The blending of families can present unique challenges, but with open communication and a commitment to putting the best interests of their new child at the forefront, they can create a loving and supportive environment for everyone involved.
Ashanti shared with ET that she never imagined (or in a million years thought) her current situation with Nelly would happen. At most, she considered the possibility a decade ago, but following their separation, she didn’t expect they’d ever speak to each other again.
