As the fourth series of the hit show begins, the owner of the restaurant at the heart of the rom-com talks about the onslaught of hysteria: So many women come here asking for the Hot Chef from Emily In Paris… I have to tell them he doesn’t exist!
As a seasoned observer of the entertainment industry and a connoisseur of fine dining, I find myself deeply intrigued by the tale of Valerio and his eatery, Terra Nera. This man has managed to weave together two seemingly disparate worlds – celebrity and cuisine – with an artistry that is nothing short of mesmerizing.
Despite the bustling crowds drawn by the Olympics, one small area consistently attracts tourists in Paris – a tranquil residential square nestled within the Sorbonne district. Throughout the year, over 15,000 visitors flock to this peaceful spot.
As a seasoned traveler who has explored countless cities and towns across Europe, I must say that this unassuming spot, with its picturesque charm and tranquil ambiance, stands out as one of my hidden gems. Unlike other destinations, it doesn’t boast any major French landmarks or garner recognition in guidebooks, yet it offers a unique allure that captivates visitors who stumble upon it. The babbling fountain, the lush greenery, and the quaint cobbled streets transport me to a simpler time, offering a peaceful respite from the hustle and bustle of more tourist-centric locations. This hidden gem is not to be missed by those seeking an authentic, off-the-beaten-path experience in France.
On the first floor of an impressive stucco building, nestled between a corporate office and a bakery, there’s a quaint, dimly lit eatery, easily identified by its red canopy – if you’re familiar with the Netflix show Emily in Paris.
Viewers will identify it as Les Deux Comperes, later rechristened L’Esprit de Gigi, a restaurant that is the workplace of Emily Cooper’s love interest, portrayed by actress Lily Collins (of both British and American heritage). Often admired for his cooking skills, Gabriel, played by French actor Lucas Bravo, eventually assumes control of the establishment and employs his culinary talent to win Emily’s affection.
In this lighthearted romantic comedy, the story unfolds against the picturesque setting of a Parisian restaurant named Terra Nera, serving as a stage for intimate conversations, business gatherings, and budding love stories.
I’ve been fortunate enough to have experienced some truly unforgettable moments in my life, but none quite like the trio of events that unfolded at that quaint little bistro tucked away in the heart of Paris. The first was a gastronomic adventure that left me questioning my taste buds: my first taste of steak tartare. It was love at first bite, or so I thought – until I discovered it was still mooing on my plate! I sent it back, somewhat embarrassed but determined to savor the perfect steak in due time.
Off-screen, on a drizzly weekday, no such romance is apparent.
On most days, this tranquil square is occupied by a serene atmosphere. However, today it’s bustling with delivery trucks, cyclists, and serious-looking commuters. With heavy clouds racing across the sky, an noisy garbage truck arrives, obstructing the view of the restaurant.
Even this doesn’t dissuade the crowds of fans who have been gathering since early morning.
Armed with smartphones and selfie sticks, donning ‘Emily’ T-shirts and bright pink berets, they strike poses for their cameras, attempting to capture the ideal shot for their social media accounts. Each one is competing to create photos and videos that will leave their friends back home green with envy.
As a lifestyle connoisseur, I must express that this hit show, Emily in Paris, has truly captured the hearts and screens of individuals from all corners of the globe – Shanghai, Sydney, Stockholm, Sao Paolo, to name but a few. This series has managed to amass an impressive following, a mere fraction of its vast international fanbase. Indeed, it stands as the most-watched show on Netflix ever, boasting millions of viewers in no less than 93 countries around the world.
Looking on with a kind and slightly weary smile through the window is Valerio Abate, a 40-year-old man, proprietor of Terra Nera. A modest Sicilian, whose salt-and-pepper beard gives away little of his youth, Valerio has grown accustomed to the bustle outside his restaurant.
He mentions that this event occurs daily since the show’s beginning, “They line up each day to snap photos outside; others come in to dine, or capture a selfie with me.”
Despite initially expecting little more than a modest local success, his simple eatery, surprisingly catering to Italian rather than French cuisine, has unexpectedly gained widespread recognition. To his astonishment, it now attracts hordes of Emily fans from all corners of the globe on a daily basis.
Valerio has not taken part in any media interviews up until now; instead, he’s been working behind the scenes, greeting patrons and maintaining an atmosphere where locals can enjoy their meal of homemade pasta and wine without interruptions during lunchtime.
Before the upcoming fourth season of Emily in Paris, due for release on Thursday, he has granted an exclusive interview to the Mail, allowing me to visit one of the most popular restaurants on Instagram during my day there.
In the heart of this vibrant cityscape, I found myself stepping into Terra Nera – a gem that perfectly mirrors its on-screen charm. With its bold red walls, vintage leather booths, and rustic wooden tables, it’s as if the set designer invited me over for a meal.
Back in 1967, I stumbled upon a humble butcher’s shop that stood the test of time. Fast forward to 1978, my family proudly took over this establishment and transformed it into a restaurant, a move that has since become a cherished part of our history. The year of its transformation is prominently displayed on the awning alongside the name ‘Chef Gabriel’, a testament to its newfound fame and recognition.
He mentions that numerous women often ask if he’s employed here, to which he replies. They express disappointment upon learning that he does not work here.
Certainly, during noon hours, young Brazilian fans are often found snapping photos outside the venue even before the doors open. One fan carries a bag adorned with an image of the Mona Lisa, her likeness hidden behind the words ‘Emily in Paris’ – a beloved icon of the Netflix-loving youth.
People keep streaming in, with some taking photos from afar and others approaching to check out the menu. Our daily specials for today are risotto made with mushrooms and truffle, priced at £22, and pasta in tomato sauce with aubergine and mozzarella, which is £15.
Valerio, who grew up in Agrigento has loved this sort of food since he was a boy.
As a child, I found myself captivated while observing my mother and grandmother prepare meals in our kitchen. The aromas emanating from the culinary space and their creative usage of simple yet delectable ingredients sourced from the southern regions of Italy – ripe tomatoes, fresh oregano, cheese, olives – still linger vividly in my memories.
‘My uncle had an Italian restaurant in Paris, and I used to come on holiday here when young.
In this scenario, I would gladly dedicate my entire duration assisting in the kitchen. He truly inspires me, and I find it fascinating that individuals from various parts of Paris flock to sample his culinary creations.
In 2015, Valerio assumed control of the restaurant, striving diligently to uphold the family’s legacy by offering homemade pasta, authentic Sicilian wines, and traditional Italian desserts like his grandmother did, such as ricotta-filled pistachio cannoli and creamy tiramisu.
Terra Nera previously experienced a taste of Hollywood limelight. Back in 2011, it graced the screens in Woody Allen’s film Midnight In Paris. Subsequently, directors approached the location for two French films in 2017 and 2018. Finally, Netflix showed interest at the end of 2019.
According to Valerio, the director visited the restaurant and developed a strong affection for it. Later on, he returned accompanied by both the French and American production crews. After enjoying a meal here, they all expressed their appreciation for the place.
As a devoted admirer with a soft spot for the brilliant mind of Darren Star, I must admit, I was initially clueless about this fresh new show. Yet, the mere fact that it stemmed from his creative genius was enough to pique my interest. You see, as a kid, I used to be captivated by none other than Beverly Hills 90210, another masterpiece he brought to life.
Filming began in March 2020 —and the same month each year since — and the fairytale began.
Over a span of ten days, the restaurant I managed, along with its adjacent boulangerie, was temporarily closed, barricaded, and the entire surrounding plaza cordoned off. It was an exciting time as stars flocked in for the filming of Emily in Paris. I must acknowledge that I received a generous compensation for my role in this production.
He reached a deal with the production company (without disclosing the amount) to compensate for the revenue loss, and he was there daily to witness the events unfold, alongside enthusiastic audiences filled with screams. In contrast to the audience, though, he had the opportunity to interact with the celebrities.
I find Lily Collins exuding a timeless elegance and grace, reminiscent of an actress straight out of the Swinging Sixties. As for Lucas Bravo, his charisma shines brightly, much like a beacon, given that his father Daniel, a former football star, was once a cherished patron.
He expresses gratitude for being a modest contributor to the series, explaining that seeing his small family restaurant depicted felt like revisiting an early romance. He acknowledges this experience is something he’ll never forget and considers himself fortunate.
Regardless of Terra Nera’s recent fame, there have been no significant changes over the years – neither in the décor, the menu offerings, nor the pricing.
Currently, it’s becoming increasingly busy with patrons: some regular locals enjoying solitary meals with their papers, yet the majority are tourists from Emily in Paris, easily recognizable by their vibrant berets and eye-catching T-shirts bearing bold slogans.
1. A team hailing from Hong Kong, self-proclaimed enthusiasts, tend to invest more effort capturing selfies rather than exploring the cuisine. Meanwhile, a pair make a ruckus near the entrance, inquiring boisterously if the establishment offers snails.
It seems countless individuals take quick, casual pictures before departing, neglecting to sample the meticulously prepared dishes by Valerio’s culinary team. Does such behavior annoy him?
Despite the unexpected calmness, he seems unbothered. “No fuss here,” he states. “If they’re not hungry now, perhaps they’ll return. I don’t get upset. I’m just glad they’ve come.”
‘I make sure there is a table for everyone; I want my customers to feel welcome and well-fed.’
At Terra Nera, only 15 tables can be found (seating up to 40 guests), and by the end of lunch service at 2:30 PM, every table has been filled. The evening seating, which commences at 7 PM, is particularly bustling, with a line forming outside before it even opens.
“Indeed, Emily in Paris seems to have made an impact,” acknowledges Valerio. “Now I’m booking tables three months ahead due to the increased demand.”
Primarily, the customer base has undergone significant transformation. Previously, it was a local eatery catering to neighbors exclusively. Today, however, I have the pleasure of encountering guests hailing from diverse global backgrounds on a daily basis.
According to him, the majority of followers seem to be from South America and Asia; however, he has encountered dedicated fans even in distant Micronesia, an isolated island nation more than 13,000 kilometers removed.
Via the show “Emily in Paris,” Valerio unexpectedly reconnected with an old flame – a Spanish admirer of the series who happened to be a customer at his restaurant the previous year. However, their relationship had ended painfully for him, leaving him longing for a new connection.
I always ensure to personally welcome every customer, extend a handshake, and introduce myself to the new faces who walk through our restaurant doors. Often, these newcomers are taken aback, recognizing me as the person they’ve seen on-screen, adding a touch of star power to their dining experience.
The remaining team members, numbering eight in all with three being chefs, appear noticeably stressed due to the continuous influx of fans.
Milly, a waitress from Chile who’s been with Terra Nera for five years, is in charge of the evening service. Sometimes, she finds the influx from Netflix a bit overwhelming.
As a long-time fan of the arts, I find myself constantly astounded by the passionate devotees who gather day after day to express their admiration for their favorite performers and creators. Growing up in a small town, I rarely had the opportunity to interact with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures, but that all changed when I moved to the city to pursue my own artistic dreams.
As a seasoned server in the heart of a bustling tourist square, I can attest to the chaotic whirlwind that descends upon us each evening. With the setting sun casting a golden glow over the cobblestone streets, hordes of tourists emerge, their smartphones held aloft like beacons guiding them towards our establishment.
As the frenzy for Emily in Paris intensifies, I find myself overwhelmed with excitement! It’s not just me watching – it seems like everyone is caught up in this whirlwind! Now, outside my humble eatery, I witness intricate TikTok choreographies, extensive YouTube tutorials, and a constant parade of outfit transformations. Oh, the passion these fans have for Emily and her Parisian adventures! It’s truly inspiring.
Sure enough, by 8pm, with dinner in full swing, the pavement outside is bustling.
A young lady named Zena, hailing from the south of Brazil, positions her selfie stick and camera tripod by her front entrance, preparing to capture some photos in a photography session.
A different spectator has arrived carrying an elaborate suitcase filled with high-end garments, presumably for on-camera wear. However, a disgruntled server requests her to relocate as this isn’t meant to be a runway.
Melodie, sporting a red beret and coordinating lipstick, hails from Turkey and is accompanied by her parents, Ozge and Sadri. They had reserved a table well in advance, and unlike many others, they are indeed enjoying their dinner at Terra Nera. They express that they desired the complete experience.
A cluster of enthusiastic Swedes ask for details on the “Emily in Paris” menu that Valerio unveiled when season one premiered, however, he no longer offers it.
Such gimmicks, he says, ‘aren’t needed any more’.
Absolutely, the food is self-explanatory: impeccably prepared, fresh, and tantalizingly scrumptious. Dining patrons visit for their social media feeds’ enhancement but discover an exceptional meal along the way. On the web, this eatery receives five-star ratings consistently.
At last, Valerio doesn’t allow me access into the kitchen, fearing an interloper could disrupt the harmony among his workmates. However, if he has hired a ‘Master Chef’, unfortunately, I haven’t spotted him around.
Instead, he invites me to take a selfie with him for his Terra Nera Instagram page (which has over 6,400 followers), where I’d be in good company alongside notable figures like Eric Cantona, Jean-Claude van Damme, and our town’s mayor.
As well as bringing in starry clientele, Emily In Paris has done wonders for his business.
He gestures towards a vacant structure on the opposite side of the street, which will house his second eatery come next year. This establishment will focus on pizza and authentic Italian gelato.
As a seasoned event organizer with decades of experience under my belt, I have witnessed countless scenes like tonight’s packed Emily tribute event. With waitstaff dashing by laden trays and the enthusiastic crowds continuing to grow, it’s all too familiar. However, I won’t be here until the wee hours, as I’ve seen this spectacle before. A weary smile crosses my face as I reminisce about the countless events I’ve orchestrated over the years. Each one unique, each one unforgettable, yet they all share a common thread – the energy and excitement that comes with bringing people together to celebrate. Despite the late hours and the seemingly endless stream of guests, there’s something truly magical about being part of these moments. It’s a privilege I never take for granted.
Although no fifth season has been confirmed yet, he is optimistic that the location of Terra Nera might continue to serve as a filming site for the show “Emily in Paris” and possibly other popular movies worldwide in the future.
As a connoisseur of the silver screen, I can’t help but feel exhilarated! This is an extraordinary chance, not just for me personally or my eatery, but for Paris as well. Being showcased in this way opens up a world of possibilities.
Regarding the bothersome Instagram influencers, it appears that any form of attention translates into positive publicity. With a smile, Valerio doesn’t refer to them as fans, but rather as potential customers.
After snapping our last group photo, he quickly posts it on his device. The number of likes keeps climbing, reaching seventy-eight so far. Guess we can’t compete!
