As Stephen Colbert drops F-bomb on gloating Trump, late-night counterparts join the fray
Stephen Colbert delivered a pointed remark directed at President Trump, following Trump’s celebration on social media about “Colbert getting fired.
During his opening monologue on Monday, the long-time host bluntly told his viewers, ‘I have a message for you,’ which was essentially a profane farewell, as this episode marked his first appearance since announcing that CBS had decided to terminate ‘The Late Show,’ effectively ending the franchise after more than 30 years.
The network’s surprising move – apparently due to financial reasons in the tough late-night market – left Colbert’s dedicated fans dismayed and bewildered, prompted worry from his fellow late-night hosts, and sparked joy among his critics, particularly President Trump. On his Truth Social platform, Trump remarked that Colbert’s ability was inferior to his ratings, and he also criticized Jimmy Kimmel, suggesting that Kimmel has even less talent than Colbert.
Previously on his talk show, at the age of 61, Colbert declared that until “The Late Show” ends in May, he’s free to express his genuine opinions about Donald Trump without any restraint. This means he can now openly speak truth to power and share his true feelings towards Trump. Colbert has been vocal about his criticism of Trump even before he became president, and since then, Trump has provided him and other late-night comedians with an abundance of material.

Entertainment & Arts
Donald Trump is expressing his joy over the termination of Stephen Colbert’s ‘Late Show’ on CBS, and he’s also urging for additional late-night TV hosts to be dismissed from their positions.
Recently, Colbert criticized his superiors for their move to accommodate Trump by resolving the president’s lawsuit regarding the editing of “60 Minutes”, a case many First Amendment experts deemed baseless. Paramount eventually agreed to pay $16 million, with most of that earmarked for Trump’s future presidential library.
Despite primarily maintaining a humorous tone during his monologue, Colbert raised doubts about CBS’ rationale for canceling his show, stating “Is it really a ‘financial decision’ if ‘The Late Show’ tops the ratings charts? It seems puzzling.” This sentiment mirrors questions that viewers have similarly expressed on social media. He proceeded with his segment, referencing reports indicating potential losses ranging from $40 million to $50 million.
Forty million is quite substantial. It’s plausible we might lose twenty-four million, but I wonder where Paramount could have allocated the remaining sixteen million? Ah, that’s right, it seems to be related to the settlement,” he casually hinted.

Reflecting on Trump’s criticism of Truth Social, Colbert playfully joked about the president wanting Jimmy Kimmel’s show to end: “I’m the sacrificial lamb. There’s only space for one on this cross and I must say, the view from up here is incredible.
Despite recent reports about cancellations, comedian Stephen Colbert has received backing from his fellow late-night hosts such as Jon Stewart (from “The Daily Show,” aired on Comedy Central, also under Paramount’s umbrella) and John Oliver (“Last Week Tonight”). On Monday, these television personalities expressed their support by visiting the Ed Sullivan Theater, where Colbert has spent most of the last decade.
At a recent Coldplay concert, a skit mimicking the viral malfunction of the kiss-camera was enacted, featuring Lin Manuel-Miranda and “Weird Al” Yankovic singing a rendition of “Viva La Vida.” As the camera swept across the audience, it caught glimpses of Anderson Cooper, Andy Cohen, Jimmy Fallon, Seth Meyers, Adam Sandler, Christopher McDonald, as well as Stewart and Oliver, among other guests. However, the couple in question, who were unveiled by the kiss-camera, was an animated Trump tenderly hugging the Paramount emblem.
Though Letterman didn’t show up at his former workplace on Monday alongside other late-night hosts, he instead posted a 20-minute clip on YouTube, filled with jabs at CBS during his time hosting “The Late Show.” The video’s caption reads: “You can’t write CBS without implying it’s BS.

Commentary: Stephen Colbert’s ‘Late Show’ is canceled, but he won’t go quietly into that goodnight
On Thursdays announcement, it was revealed that ‘The Late Show With Stephen Colbert’ is set to conclude in 2026. Interestingly, this decision seems to align with Paramount’s efforts to be acquired by Skydance Media.
On Monday’s broadcast on Comedy Central, Stewart took some time during his most recent episode to talk about the cancellation of “The Late Show.” Stewart reminded viewers that he and Colbert were both former contributors to “The Daily Show,” expressed admiration for watching his fellow comedian surpass all expectations in his role over the years, and criticized CBS for terminating a show that undeniably troubled a sensitive and vindictive president. To conclude his opening act, Stewart danced and sang along with a choir to a well-known tune.
I respectfully disagree with your approach.
During the turmoil at Paramount, Stewart pondered the potential future of “The Daily Show” during a podcast discussion, which was released prior to the cancellation of “The Late Show.” In an interview with the “Weekly Show” podcast, he mentioned that he hadn’t received any information about his show being cancelled.
He stated, “No one’s warned me not to settle into that office, Stewart, but I’ve had my share of evictions from other places. We’ll find another place just as good.
This week, “The Daily Show” is moving forward with the debut of former writer and current on-screen correspondent Josh Johnson as the anchor. He will take over the hosting duties from Tuesday to Thursday, joining the existing rotation that includes Ronny Chieng, Jordan Klepper, Michael Kosta, and Desi Lydic.
