As someone who has been a die-hard fantasy fan since I first picked up a copy of “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy at the tender age of 12, I must admit that my initial excitement for “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” was tainted by the looming specter of disappointment. The first season left me with mixed feelings, but I held on to hope that the second season would deliver the epic tale I had been craving.
Currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video, the second season of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” is underway, and while it may not be my all-time favorite high fantasy TV series, it offers an enjoyable, action-packed journey at its peak moments. There’s no need to argue that it’s flawless, is there?
However, it seems there are concerns about the future of the show, as recent data from SambaTV indicates that Season 2’s ratings have dipped compared to Season 1 during an equivalent period. This has sparked speculation in some media outlets that the series may be at risk of cancellation, with Joe stating, “It’s likely to be cancelled.” In response, Prime Video is defending the show, emphasizing that it has been viewed by over 40 million people worldwide since the initial three episodes of Season 2 were launched about two weeks ago. A fourth episode has also been made available.
Grateful to our worldwide audience of over 40 million and still growing, we extend our heartfelt thanks to the fans who’ve made The Rings of Power the most popular series on Amazon Prime Video.

The memo obtained by Deadline reveals that a significant number of our Rings of Power viewers are from countries outside the U.S., demonstrating the global impact and expanding customer base of Prime Video. Notably, Deadline also mentions that during the initial season’s release, Amazon boasted about 25 million people watching the show on its first day. Given this, it is likely that the viewer count for the first season surpassed 40 million faster than the current one did.
It appears that Amazon hasn’t disclosed specific viewership figures for season 2 of “The Rings of Power,” but based on available data, it seems likely that viewership has decreased compared to season 1. However, with around a month delay in Nielsen ratings, we’ll have to wait for more concrete numbers. Even though the viewership might be lower than the first season, 40 million is still a significant number. It’s important to consider some factors that could influence these numbers, such as the two-year absence of the show from airwaves, which can cause a temporary drop in audience. This phenomenon is common for second seasons of shows. Additionally, Deadline notes that the second season of “House of the Dragon,” another popular high fantasy series, saw lower ratings initially but eventually recovered. It’s possible that “The Rings of Power” could experience a similar trend.
Regarding any concerns about the potential cancellation, I believe they are exaggerated at this juncture. Amazon has poured significant resources into this series and reportedly intends a five-season run. Although we couldn’t extract concrete details from Cynthia Addai-Robinson (Míriel) regarding season 3, Morfydd Clark (Galadriel) hinted to NME that “at some point, season three will indeed take place.
For now, new episodes of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power air Thursday on Prime Video.
