As Holly Willoughby signs up for ITV reboot You Bet - What other nostalgic game shows could be making a comeback?

As a seasoned game show enthusiast with decades of viewing under my belt, I must say that these classic British game shows have truly stood the test of time!

Holly Willoughby is set front an ITV reboot of the iconic 90s challenge show, You Bet!, alongside her Dancing On Ice co-host Stephen Mulhern.

Originally hosted by Darren Day, along with the late Bruce Forsyth and Matthew Kelly, a cherished program is set to make its comeback on ITV1 and ITVX with two thrilling prime-time special events this fall.

In a modern-day comeback, ordinary people with extraordinary skills will undertake unbelievably daring tasks, hoping to win a substantial monetary reward.

1997 marked the airing of the finale for the game show You Bet!, which chronicles the return of popular shows like Gladiators, Survivor, Wheel of Fortune, and Deal or No Deal.

However, with yet another game show making its comeback, let’s reminisce about some classic game shows that we’d love to see back on our screens.

Fort Boyard

From October 1998 through Christmas Eve in 2001, Fort Boyard, modeled after a French television program, was broadcast.

From 2001, when its final episode aired, until a brief revival in 2003, the show was hosted by Melinda Messenger. During this time, it was known as Fort Boyard: Takes On The World, with Jodie Penfold taking over hosting duties.

The show was filmed at a fort located along the western coast of France and bore a resemblance to The Crystal Maze, as participants engaged in various tasks to amass cash prizes.

contestants embarked on challenging tasks in pursuit of finding the keys that unlocked the Treasure Room. They encountered obstacles such as slippery giant seesaws, climbing ropes, and grappling with a powerful female competitor amidst muddy conditions to secure the keys.

In this production, Leslie Grantham played Boyard, the one who devised the tasks, and Geoffrey Bayldon assumed the character of The Professor, a captive from the Watch Tower who presented riddles to the competitors.

Raven

From 2002 to 2010, the children’s adventure game show called Raven aired on CBBC. Over this period, they produced nine main series and three spin-off shows.

The Scottish actor James Mackenzie introduces a narrative featuring six youths, who are called ‘warriors.’ Throughout this storyline, they engage in various challenges, with some of them tragically meeting their end.

As a devoted disciple, I follow the lead of the enigmatic figure known as Warlord Raven. Transforming effortlessly between the form of a raven and that of a human, he skillfully navigates us through each challenge, revealing insights from within our very thoughts.

As a lifestyle expert, I’d rephrase it this way: Each time you fail a task, one of your ‘lives’ is forfeited, symbolized by a feather on our game’s flag. When all your lives are gone, you’re out of the competition and no longer part of our show.

The tasks challenged the children’s physical prowess, quickness, and cooperation as they overcame various challenges like moving rocks, constructed boats, and solved puzzles.

Supermarket Sweep

For several decades, from 1965 to 2022, the entertaining game show “Supermarket Sweep” ruled TV screens, based on shopping tasks in a supermarket.

The objective was to answer questions and pass various tests in order to win the grand prize.

The show, which was initially presented by the late Dale Winton, aired for an exact duration of 8 years, starting in September 1993 and ending in September 2001. It was subsequently brought back to life on ITV from February to August 2007.

Rylan Clark-Neal took over hosting the show in 2019.

The game consists of three teams of two, each with a clock that starts with 60 seconds on it.

As a devoted follower, I strive to maximize the available time on our clock by tackling the intriguing questions and riddles presented by the hostess.

The time they accumulate determines how long they have in the ‘Big Sweep’ round to run around a studio mock-up of a supermarket, collecting shopping items.

As a devoted supporter, I eagerly participate knowing that the cart brimming with the highest-valued goods will secure us a spot in the ultimate finale, the coveted ‘Super Sweep’ prize round.

Are you Smarter than a Ten year Old?

Are You Smarter than a 10 Year Old? is a British quiz show which aired on Sky 1 from 2007 to 2010.

The programme was based on the American television game show Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader?

Two versions of the show existed: one aired weekly during prime time, hosted by Noel Edmonds, while the other was a daily edition, initially hosted by Dick and Dom, but later taken over by Damian Williams.

In this program, we invite participants over the age of 18 years old, who strive to correctly answer a set of ten questions drawn from elementary school study materials.

In this game, every accurate response adds to the player’s winnings; there is a potential top prize of £250,000 (or £500,000 during series three) in prime time and £50,000 in daytime that can be taken home.

Treasure Hunt

The British program “Treasure Hunt” originated from the design of the French show “La Chasse au Trésor,” which was developed by Jacques Antoine.

Back in the ’80s, I had the pleasure of gracing Channel 4’s airwaves from December 1982 to May 1989. Fast forward a decade, I was brought back to life, so to speak, on BBC Two between December 2002 and August 2003. In essence, I’ve had a rich history of captivating audiences for quite some time now.

In this setup, a duo of competitors inside a studio were tasked with solving up to five puzzles. They could only rely on a collection of maps and additional resources for guidance. Their communication with a skyrunner, equipped with a helicopter, was done through a radio link.

Each correct solution earned the competitors an increased monetary reward, with every round being time-bound.

Originally, the host was Kenneth Kendall, a former BBC newscaster, and the participant referred to as ‘skyrunner’ was Anneka Rice, who is also a broadcaster.
