Everyone’s favorite British romantic comedy heroine, Bridget Jones (Renée Zellweger), was back in 2023 with Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy – the fourth movie in the Bridget Jones series.
There’s great news for fans of the popular romantic comedy character! The film now has a new streaming home in the UK. Starting today, you can watch Mad About the Boy, which follows Bridget’s experiences with single motherhood, on Sky Cinema or NOW (with a Cinema Membership).
Bridget’s comeback was full of her signature humor and lively moments, but it also touched on deeper feelings as she dealt with a difficult time after the death of her husband, Mark Darcy (Colin Firth). Here are five of the most moving scenes from the movie…
What to Read Next
The ghost of Mark Darcy
I was hooked just minutes into Mad About the Boy! It’s way more than just a fluffy rom-com, honestly. It deals with grief in a really sensitive way, which I appreciated. I remember when Bridget first arrives at a dinner party at a friend’s house, Mark meets her at the door and softly says: “You look very beautiful tonight Mrs Darcy”. It was such a sweet moment!
However, this pleasant moment quickly turns devastating. When Bridget enters, it’s revealed that Mark existed only in her imagination – she’s actually there by herself. We soon learn that Mark tragically died four years ago while working on a humanitarian mission. Seeing Bridget walk into a room filled with couples, without her husband, immediately establishes the deeply emotional story that’s about to unfold.

Advice from Bridget’s dad
We later learn that Mark isn’t the only significant person Bridget has lost; her father also died recently. A touching flashback shows her dad (Jim Broadbent) giving her heartfelt advice. He tells her, “It’s not enough to survive. You’ve got to live,” and pleads, “Promise me you’ll live, Bridget.”
Though it’s a fleeting apperance, Broadbent’s performance packs a big emotional punch.

Mark’s Birthday balloons
Later in the movie, I seriously felt for Bridget again when she tried to make Mark’s birthday special, even though it was tough. She wanted to honor her late husband, so she decided to climb a hill with her kids, Billy and Mabel. It was a really touching scene – when they got to the top, they each let go of a balloon with a personal message written on it. It definitely pulled at my heartstrings!
Honestly, that scene just wrecked me. It really showed how Bridget wasn’t just dealing with her own sadness, but was also being there for her kids as they processed their loss. It was so powerful to see her support them through it all. It’s one of those moments that really sticks with you, you know? Definitely a tearjerker. It’s amazing how the game handles these themes.

Billy’s performance
Near the film’s conclusion, Bridget becomes emotional when her son, Billy, gives her a touching surprise. During his school’s Christmas performance, Billy performs a song his late father often sang – I’d Do Anything from the musical Oliver!
Bridget finds herself imagining Mark sharing in this special family moment, as they both watch Billy perform from the crowd. After the show, she says to Billy, “Daddy would be so proud of you.”

The kiss in the snow
A Bridget Jones movie isn’t complete without a character having a romantic epiphany right in the street. Throughout the film, Bridget had several potential partners, but she ultimately fell for primary school teacher Mr. Wallacker (Chiwetel Ejiofor).
Just like her romantic kiss in the snow with Mark in the first movie, Bridget finally gets her dream happily ever after kiss – this time with Mr. Wallacker! However, she has to run after him down a very cold street to make it happen.
It’s a touching scene as Bridget begins to open her heart to new possibilities in love, while also acknowledging that she will always cherish the memories of Mark.
You can watch Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy on Sky Cinema or NOW if you have a cinema membership.
