Arranger: A Role-Puzzling Adventure is a puzzle masterpiece

As a huge fan of innovative and thought-provoking games, I was immediately drawn to Arranger: A Role-Puzzling Adventure. The game’s unique title screen hooked me in right away – it’s not every day you see a tutorial disguised as a title screen. But Furniture & Mattress’ clever design didn’t stop there.

A Role-Puzzling Adventure,” instead of a typical title screen appearing immediately, developer Furniture & Mattress presents a puzzle. The screen initially displays the seemingly unintelligible text “GER ARRAN.” However, as you experiment with button inputs, such as moving your joystick to the left several times, the title “Arranger” is revealed. This innovative introduction not only functions as a title screen but also serves as a tutorial on how to play the game.

As a passionate fan, I’d describe “Arranger: A Role-Puzzling Adventure” as an intriguing blend of role-playing and puzzle elements, hitting stores on Nintendo Switch, mobile through Netflix, PlayStation 5, and Windows PC this Thursday. In this game, you embark on a captivating journey with Jemma, a magical misfit, who ventures beyond the confines of her small hometown. However, be prepared for a mind-bending experience as the entire world is transformed into one large shuffle puzzle!

Starting from the get-go, I’ve been given a chance to explore the game world through a guided experience. Whenever I encounter an obstacle, such as a tree stump in my path, I can maneuver around it by moving the analog stick. Visualize this: There are three squares forming a horizontal line. I’m on the rightmost square, and there’s an unmovable tree stump in the middle one. To reach the left side of the stump, I simply press the analog stick to the right once, which effectively loops me around to the left of the obstacle. This mechanism operates not only horizontally but also vertically.

In the game “Arranger,” the principles guiding how objects move remain constant. However, Furniture & Mattress creatively explores this concept. Initially, they introduce a sword, and the objective becomes figuring out ways to reach the immobile monster with it for battle. The first boss fight reinforces the idea: Since the monster and sword are interconnected, moving the tiles on the board is necessary to encircle the creature. This adds complexity to the game without causing frustration due to the consistent rules. There’s also a touch of humor: Sometimes you need to bring characters or items along, while other times it’s just an unpredictable outcome from the movement mechanics.

Instead of “The tile-shifting is not just something you do in the game — you can see its impact on the NPCs around you,” you could say: “The consequences of shifting tiles extend beyond the game, affecting non-player characters around me.” For example, I once accidentally knocked over a neighbor’s ladder while reaching for an item, causing them to stumble and fall. In another instance, I carelessly knocked over a paint bucket, leaving a trail of color behind me. And as I wandered around, unintentionally moving potted plants and rearranging street signs, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of accomplishment amidst the chaos. These unexpected outcomes make for delightful moments of discovery as I explore how tiles can be moved. It’s a thrill to experience the relief, joy, and pride that comes from finding solutions within the disarray.

In contrast to typical role-playing games, when playing as Jemma, there are no items to enhance, no armor to acquire, and no weapons to put away. Instead, all necessary tools are presented on the map for manipulation. The primary objective is not gathering physical possessions but rather acquiring a deeper understanding of how movement functions within the game. Each new location offers a fresh take on this fundamental concept, prompting players to explore creative ways to navigate around challenges or access new areas. Jemma’s journey of self-discovery aligns seamlessly with this design, making the puzzles feel organic and authentic to the experience.

In an engaging and heartfelt narrative, “Arranger” stands out as a must-play puzzle game. The experience becomes evident from the very instant you hit the start button.
