Arnold Schwarzenegger jokes about Maria Shriver taking half of his money in divorce after love child scandal

Arnold Schwarzenegger made light of his divorce from ex-wife Maria Shriver on Thursday.

The 78-year-old actor spoke at the Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony for journalist Chris Wallace, and mentioned his ex-wife, who is 69 years old.

Arnold Schwarzenegger complimented Wallace, explaining that he recognizes great journalism because of his extensive experience with journalists.

Over the years, I’ve given countless interviews – I’ve spoken with thousands of journalists.

He jokingly referenced his ex-wife, saying, ‘Being married to a journalist wasn’t new for me. The only difference between Chris and Maria is that Chris didn’t take half of my earnings.’

I was absolutely devastated when I heard Arnold and Maria were separating on May 10th, 2011. It felt like a personal blow, honestly. And then, just a week later, to find out he’d been having an affair… it was just awful. I couldn’t believe the news. It completely changed how I saw him, even though I’m still a huge fan, it was just… shocking.

When they decided to separate, they shared a statement saying that both of them were going through a significant period of change in their personal lives and careers.

We made this decision as a team, after careful consideration and a lot of discussion.

The ex-couple shared that they had been separated and were figuring out what their relationship would look like going forward.

They shared that they will continue to co-parent their four children, who remain the most important part of their lives.

Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver have four children together: daughters Katherine, 35, and Christina, 34, and sons Patrick, 32, and Christopher, 27.

A week later, Arnold Schwarzenegger publicly acknowledged his affair with his former housekeeper, Mildred Patricia Baena, in a statement to the Los Angeles Times. He said that after finishing his term as governor, he told his wife about the relationship, which had happened more than ten years prior.

‘I understand and deserve the feelings of anger and disappointment among my friends and family.

I messed up, plain and simple, and I completely own that. I’ve sincerely apologized to Maria, my kids, and everyone else I’ve affected. I really am deeply sorry for the pain I’ve caused.

The affair produced the actor-turned-politician’s son Joseph Baena, 27. 

Baena didn’t know that the Austrian bodybuilder was his father until he was 13-years-old. 

Shriver filed for divorce on July 1, 2011.

Arnold Schwarzenegger discussed his well-known affair in an interview with Men’s Journal in December 2017.

Dwelling on past mistakes won’t fix things, so it’s important to focus on the future and building strong relationships with his children, he explained in the article.

He joked that if he could actually be the Terminator, he’d travel back in time and tell his younger self, “Arnold… don’t do it.”

And he noted, ‘You know, it’s always easy to be smart in hindsight. That’s not the way it works.’
