Armando Cabral Reimagines USM Haller With Heritage Portuguese Textiles

USM, a leading Swiss furniture company known for its modular designs, has once again partnered with designer Armando Cabral to launch the “NKYINKYIM A CASA” collection. This is the second phase of their collaboration, following an initial launch in 2025. The collection’s name comes from a Ghanaian Adinkra symbol that represents change, development, and evolving paths. The project investigates how design can preserve and share cultural heritage across different places and through time. Inspired by Cabral’s life experiences in Guinea-Bissau, Portugal, London, and New York, the collection reimagines the home – not as a fixed location, but as a vibrant, evolving space focused on connection, traditions, and sharing stories.

This new eight-piece collection adds a warm, human touch to USM’s classic Haller system by incorporating traditional Portuguese materials and craftsmanship. Designer Cabral worked with Fabricaal, a historic Portuguese mill, to blend modern industrial design with heritage techniques. The result features key seating pieces upholstered in bright woolen fabrics inspired by the colors and weaving traditions of Portugal’s Alentejo region – beautifully connecting Swiss engineering with skilled artistry.

This collection offers a variety of comfortable and functional furniture for modern living. Key pieces include the cozy Bassarel love chair, perfect for close conversation, and the striking Lily daybed, designed to be a focal point in any living room. Comfortable seating options are completed by the Manjak and Manjak Mini chairs. For storage and display, the collection features stylish pieces like the Banu credenza, Arkad sidetable, Uno bookcase, and the unique Nkyinkyim bookshelf. All designs are flexible and adaptable, allowing you to easily rearrange and update your space as your needs change.

The collection first launched symbolically in Lisbon, Portugal, at MAAT Central’s Sala dos Geradores before being presented worldwide in New York City. You can currently see “NKYINKYIM A CASA” at the USM showroom located at 28–30 Greene Street in Soho.
