Ariana Grande responds to backlash over her starring as Glinda in Wicked
As a lifestyle expert with a keen eye for talent and a deep appreciation for the arts, I must say that Ariana Grande‘s journey to playing Glinda in the Wicked film adaptation is nothing short of inspiring. With her background in musical theater and lifelong love for the show, she has more than earned her place alongside Cynthia Erivo on the silver screen.
Ariana Grande addresses the comments on her selection as Glinda in the film version of the popular stage play Wicked, directed by Jon M. Chu.
On a recent episode of the Sentimental Men podcast, the 31-year-old musician, who is currently promoting her film in Sydney, Australia, chatted with hosts Quincy Brown and Kevin Bianchi about her character in the show.
In her explanation of the audition process, she conveyed that she felt under pressure to surmount the challenge of breaking away from her established pop star persona.
Ariana confessed that she had some minor apprehension and pre-existing assumptions about her capabilities for the role, wondering if she could meet expectations or perhaps make mistakes.
Naming two of her hit songs, she imagined the perspective of a critic: ‘Going off of Side to Side, I probably would’ve said the same thing. I probably would’ve said, “Why the f**k? Kill me. I’ve waited 20 years for this. Kill me.” I would’ve said that as a fan from the outside. Knowing of only 7 Rings, probably I’d say, “Well, that’s bull****.” So, you know, I get it.’
She shared that what she adored greatly during the auditions for Wicked was its requirement for earning a spot. Being involved in something large-scale isn’t simply handed out due to past accomplishments; it demands effort and merit.
“It’s enjoyable to redefine people’s perspectives and put in the effort to regain their trust in new situations.
As a lifelong admirer who hails from Florida, I delved into the world of musical theater at the tender age of eight, and “Wicked” – a production that initially showcased the stellar talents of Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel – held a special place in my heart. Fast forward to years later, and I was fortunate enough to secure a role within this cherished musical.
Grande understood fans would have high expectations of her in the role.
In the musical “Wicked,” the characters Elphaba, portrayed by Cynthia Erivo, and Glinda cross paths at Shiz University. They experience a pivotal moment together in the presence of Jeff Goldblum, who plays the Wizard of Oz.
Universal enlisted Chu to direct the beloved story in 2021.
On November 22, 2024, the initial part of the two-part Wicked movie series will be released in cinemas, followed by the second installment approximately a year later on November 21, 2025.
Over the weekend, Ariana took to Instagram, posting promotional content as she kicked off her press tour.
One photo in a carousel post showed her headed to the movie’s Sydney premiere in a custom pink Vivienne Westwood gown.
She wrote to her online audience, ‘There are truly no words. I missed you all. Thank you for welcoming us with such warmth and love. What a special way to begin this tour.’
Grande alsol made sure to subtly pay tribute to boyfriend and co-star Ethan Slater as she tagged him in a photo of him holding her Vivienne Westwood gown
She reposted a message from an unofficial account, celebrating the third year since it was made public that she would play Glinda.
