Ariana Grande refused to do a Wicked change for classic song
As a long-time musical theater enthusiast who grew up with the original cast recording of “Wicked” blasting through my headphones, I was thrilled to see this beloved tale hit the big screen. The recent revelation that Ariana Grande refused to alter the classic song ‘Popular’ in a hip-hop style only adds to my admiration for her dedication to the character and the story.
Composer Stephen Schwartz, known for his work on wicked tunes, has disclosed that Ariana Grande declined to modify a proposed adjustment to a well-known track.
Just released in cinemas is the film adaptation of the smash-hit musical, featuring timeless melodies like “Defying Gravity” and “Popular”.
In a recent discussion about incorporating vibrant hip-hop elements into the movie version of ‘Popular’, as suggested by Schwartz, it was revealed that Ariana Grande wasn’t particularly enthusiastic about this idea.
In an effort to bring freshness to the film’s soundtrack, my music group and I considered altering the beat. We pondered, perhaps, introducing a hint of hip-hop rhythm. This was reminisced in a conversation with the Los Angeles Times.
Ariana firmly stated, “No way, don’t go ahead with that. I aspire to be Glinda, not Ariana Grande portraying Glinda,” as Schwartz commented.
Winnie Holzman, the writer behind both the screenplay and the original book for the musical, subsequently commended Ariana Grande’s portrayal of Glinda.
She expressed that it seemed like the girl was simply enjoying herself, but there’s more to it. It seems that this role holds a significant personal meaning for her, and it feels less like work and more like a fulfillment of her own destiny.
Producer Marc Platt added: “She was crying after we finished filming [‘Popular’] because she was so happy. If you look closely when she’s dancing around that hallway, you can really see the genuine joy on her face and it’s glorious. Really, it’s perfect.”
Following its debut last week, the film “Wicked” – initiating a two-film sequence – has been a significant success at the box office. It set a record for the highest movie opening for an adaptation of a Broadway production in both the US and abroad, raking in $164.2 million during its premiere weekend.
Wicked is out now in cinemas.
