As a seasoned gamer and theater enthusiast with over two decades of experience under my belt, I must say that Ariana Grande‘s portrayal of Glinda in “Wicked” has me utterly intrigued. The way she handles criticism is a masterclass in resilience, especially when it comes to the unique demands of her craft.
Ariana Grande has spoken up about the comments she’s faced regarding the alteration in her singing voice for her part in the musical, Wicked.
A Grammy-winning artist is set to appear in Jon M Chu’s upcoming film version of a popular Broadway musical, taking on the role of Glinda the Good Witch alongside Cynthia Erivo, who portrays Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West.
In June of this year, a video from an episode of Penn Badgley’s podcast “Podcrushed” became popular online. Fans noted that Ariana Grande’s voice seemed to change between higher and lower tones.

In response to criticism on a TikTok post, Grande stated: “I adjust my voice range (from high to low) frequently based on the amount of singing I’m doing. This is something I’ve always done.
In an interview with Vanity Fair, Grande expressed her thoughts about the criticism regarding her voice change for the character Glinda: “Some people may not realize the effort and training required to alter one’s voice, whether it’s modifying it for singing, adopting a different dialect for a role, or creating a character voice.
The performer similarly highlighted the inconsistency where a male actor is applauded for altering his voice for a character, yet this discrepancy persists.

She stated, “When a man performs a certain action, it is often highly praised.” Of course, there are humorous comments too, but they usually come after initial admiration: ‘Wow, he was completely immersed in the character.’ And that’s just part of the acting profession.
Experience in this field often brings with it the timeless tale of women facing unique challenges. Instead of being treated equally, we may find ourselves scrutinized more closely than others, subject to different treatment at times.
In simpler terms, the movie version of “Wicked” will be divided into two parts. The first part is set to release this coming November, while the second part is planned for release in November 2025.
Michelle Yeoh, Jeff Goldblum and Bridgerton‘s Jonathan Bailey also star.
Wicked: Part One will be released in cinemas on November 22.
