Ariana Grande explains why she uses real name in Wicked

As a long-time fan of musical theater and Ariana Grande, witnessing the convergence of these two worlds in the upcoming film adaptation of “Wicked” has been an unparalleled joy. Seeing Ariana embrace her full name, Ariana Grande-Butera, in the closing credits of this highly anticipated production felt like a warm, heartfelt nod to her humble beginnings as a young girl enchanted by the magic of Broadway.

Ariana Grande has explained why she decided to use her full name in the closing credits of Wicked.

The award-winning vocalist is set to appear in Jon M Chu’s upcoming film version of the popular Broadway play, taking on the role of Glinda the Kind Witch alongside Cynthia Erivo, who portrays Elphaba, the infamous Wicked Witch of the West.

The movie credits list Ariana Grande by her full name, Ariana Grande-Butera, a combination of her mother Joan Grande’s surname and her father Edward Butera’s surname, which have both been included in her name.

In an interview on The Streaming Service with Justin Hill, Grande clarified that using her full name rather than her stage name during the show was a heartfelt gesture to acknowledge and honor her younger self.

She expressed that, technically speaking, her name is “Little Ari,” but she feels this experience brought her back to herself in many ways. She traced her connection to Glinda, Elphaba, and even her younger self who saw the show at age 10, when her name was given as “Ari” for the first time. This felt like a beautiful way to pay tribute to that part of her past.

After Grande had previously responded to concerns raised in 2021 regarding her casting as Glinda, people who are passionate about musical theater expressed their doubts due to her pop music career background.

On the Sentimental Men podcast, she shared, “I had a tiny bit of that initial apprehension or pre-existing thoughts about what I might be capable of achieving or not, and why I might be incorrect or inadequate.

Based on “Side to Side”, I likely would have expressed similar sentiments. If given the chance, I might have exclaimed, “What in the world? Just kill me. I’ve waited 20 years for this. Kill me.” As an outsider who only knows ‘7 Rings’, I’d probably say, “That’s a load of rubbish.” To sum it up, I understand your sentiment.

The first part of the movie “Wicked” will debut on November 22 this year, and the second part is set to be released in November 2025.

Wicked: Part One will be released in cinemas on November 22.
