Ariana Grande explains voice change during viral interview — ‘I’ve always done this’

As a dedicated fan of Ariana Grande, I have been following her musical journey closely for years. Her recent interview on Penn Badgley’s “Podcrushed” podcast sparked quite a buzz among the community due to an apparent change in her speaking voice. At first, I was taken aback by this revelation, as I had always admired Grande’s distinct and captivating tone.

In the forthcoming “Wicked” film musical, Grande, portraying the radiant enchantress, faced criticism this week due to a viral video clip of her switching accents while conversing during an interview.

In the opening segment of the June 17th episode of Penn Badgley’s “Podcrushed” podcast, the artist formerly known as Ariana Grande starts out speaking softly and quietly to Penn. It’s worth mentioning that Penn previously appeared in her music video for “The Boy Is Mine.” However, when she addresses her co-host Sophie Ansari, her tone noticeably becomes more animated and elevated.

Online users promptly noticed the difference, with one individual using the handle @X expressing emotion by saying “this voice modification brings back memories of sweet old Ariana for me,” while another exclaimed, “Oh dear Glinda, you’re freeing your girl!”

Grande has since offered an explanation — or, several.

She’s been practicing this habit for two years, along with taking care of her vocals, as she commented on the viral TikTok video. I deliberately adjust my vocal placement – high or low – based on how much singing I do, she explained, adding that she’s always done so.

The singer once shared on the “Zach Sang Show” about the intense vocal preparation she underwent for “Wicked”: “I practiced daily… to change my voice, not just how I sang but also myself. I had to dismantle aspects of myself to convince them I was capable of portraying this other character.”

Fans have previously pointed out that Grande seems to slip into a particular character, with this behavior being noticed after her 2023 R.E.M. Beauty promotional video and her 2024 Oscars presentation alongside “Wicked” costar Cynthia Erivo. The idea that the singer deliberately changes her voice is not a new topic; there are numerous videos on TikTok and YouTube documenting its development throughout the years.

Despite some fans being more intrigued by the possibility of a deluxe edition of Ariana Grande’s March album “eternal sunshine” rather than her speaking style during her “Podcrushed” episode.

“A day after the Met Gala, I headed to the studio and worked there for approximately 10 days straight. It felt as if I had been living there. Upon waking up today, I was struck with a sense of disorientation, similar to Austin Powers being thawed out – I kept asking myself ‘Where have I been? Where have I been?'”

She added: “I’ve been producing a great deal of writing recently. Perhaps there’s more to come, but eventually, I hope to release a high-end version.”

On Monday, Grande unveiled a new version of “The Boy Is Mine,” teaming up with R&B veterans Brandy and Monica. The trio originally collaborated on a hit duet by the same name back in 1998, and Brandy and Monica made appearances in the music video for Grande’s song.

The “thank u, next” artist expressed her disbelief and uncertainty about a situation on Instagram, stating, “I find it hard to believe this is true (I’m not sure I’ll even remember it once it’s passed).” She went on to express her heartfelt gratitude towards Brandy and Monica for their participation in the moment and for having inspired her in countless ways. The depth of her appreciation is difficult to put into words.
