However, there’s a certain warmth—and perhaps even a hint of health?—in the connection between Rick (played by Walton Goggins) and Chelsea (Aimee Lou Wood), the grumpy old man and his cheerful companion who could very well be soulmates…even if their astrological signs don’t align.

In Episode 1, when Rick and Chelsea disembarked the boat for the first time, some viewers might have thought their relationship was a common one where an older man is with a younger woman for his wealth, and she flaunts being with a wealthy guy. Indeed, we’ve seen other men at the resort who fit this mold. However, tender moments like Rick comforting Chelsea after the robbery scare and Chelsea subtly urging Rick to seek therapy hint that their bond is deeper than what viewers typically expect from couples on this show; it appears they share a genuine connection that transcends typical stereotypes.

In Episode 4, the profound bond between Rick and Chelsea unfolds. For days, I’ve seen them both appear distant and unhappy, but in this episode, Rick confides in Chelsea the reason for their journey to Thailand. He shares that his mother, moments before her passing, disclosed that the proprietor of the White Lotus hotel was responsible for his father’s death. Overwhelmed by a sense of justice and loss, Rick feels compelled to confront this man who, in his view, took away both his father and his future. Chelsea, understanding the weight of his emotions, offers him comfort, embracing him tightly—she’s come to understand that he carries not just emotional baggage, but also a fresh wound of pain.

Later, Chelsea implores Rick against traveling to Bangkok to chase after this alleged killer. She’s well aware of Rick’s unstable traits and foresees potential trouble. In this instance, it’s challenging not to fret about Rick, despite his questionable motives, as Chelsea appears genuinely concerned. The exchange implies a long-standing bond between them—though it’s a relationship that leans towards the problematic “I can save him” stereotype, where a woman believes she can mend a damaged man by taking on his repair.

It’s clear that some may criticize Rick for not showing enough care towards Chelsea or potentially endangering her, and they might also argue he needs to work on himself before committing to a relationship. I understand their concerns. Is their relationship something to strive for? Not necessarily. Ideally, your partner should be emotionally available rather than distant, and they shouldn’t put you in harm’s way like releasing venomous snakes that could potentially endanger you. However, compared to the guests at the White Lotus, who haven’t shown much support or loving partnership, Chelsea and Rick seem compatible. In other words, their relationship might be considered a ‘love match’ when measured against the standards set by others in this series.

As a cinephile, allow me to delve into the intricate dynamics that set Rick and Chelsea apart from other cinematic couples. Their previous relationships, we’ll explore, have paved the way for their unique bond. So, what makes these two (Rick and Chelsea, if you will) stand out? It’s a captivating mix of shared experiences, personal growth, and an undeniable spark that sets them apart on the silver screen.

Season 1 explored power imbalances in relationships

In Season 2, it was revealed that Greg had been plotting to kill Tanya for her money since their first meeting, a plan he had been executing over a long period of time.

Season 2 focused on infidelity

Season 2 focused on themes of infidelity and its destructive consequences. The main couple, Cameron (Theo James) and Daphne (Meghann Fahy), repeatedly betray each other. In fact, Daphne hints that her children may not be biologically his, a secret that remains hidden from Cameron. Money has created a rift between Harper (Aubrey Plaza) and Ethan (Will Sharpe). They’ve moved into a marriage without sex, eventually straying outside their relationship. Whether these extramarital affairs will heal or tear them apart is left unanswered.

In this story, the elder Di Grasso men, F. Murray Abraham and Michael Imperioli, are unfaithful to their spouses. Meanwhile, the youngest member of the family, Albie (Adam DiMarco), falls victim to a local prostitute who tricks him into sending her money. Portia (Hayley Lu Richardson) also has an affair with Jack (Leo Woodall), but she too gets deceived and narrowly escapes being killed. Unfortunately, Tanya’s marriage ends in her tragic death.

Rick and Chelsea’s moments of genuine affection

Despite the attention-grabbing incident where a snake bit Chelsea’s leg due to Rick’s carelessness, viewers have found themselves captivated by brief yet potent instances of emotional connection between Rick and Chelsea. It’s evident that Chelsea is concerned about Rick’s mental state. She expresses her intent to help him regain his happiness, suggesting that he hasn’t always been in this troubled state. A proactive approach towards Rick’s therapy, by prepaying for sessions upfront, can be seen as a subtle yet effective way of addressing his mental health concerns.

Despite regularly mocking Chelsea’s effusive statements, Rick’s genuine feelings become apparent during tense situations. For instance, when a gunman threatened Chelsea in the hotel, Rick rushed to comfort her with a heartfelt hug, struggling to hold back tears. This was one of the most overt displays of affection we’ve witnessed on this show. Even when Rick appears indifferent towards Chelsea’s assertion that she could have died later, his actions following the robbery tell a contrasting tale. Here is a man who feigns disinterest but in truth harbors deep emotions. (Keeping it simple and straightforward.)

In a similar fashion, he becomes frightened when Chelsea gets bitten by a snake. Remarkably, Chelsea pardons him swiftly – if not realistically – for releasing all the snakes. Maybe it’s a reflection of her overly optimistic nature. Perhaps it’s an oddity. But could it be that Chelsea is the only one capable of handling this immature man, and finds joy in doing so?

Additionally, there’s the subtle affection of a deeply connected couple. In a later scene, dinner with Greg/Gary and his partner Chloe (Charlotte Le Bon), Greg incorrectly assumes Chloe’s nationality, leading to an argument between them. Rick and Chelsea exchange a silent understanding that any long-term couple would recognize. They not only understand each other intuitively—something seems odd about this relationship they are witnessing—but secretly delight in the fact that they are not like that couple. Later, they share a tender moment in bed, a rare display of affection this season hinting at their romantic bond.

Rick is finally truthful with Chelsea in Episode 4

If Rick is being truthful, as it appears he is genuinely distressed by this information about his father, his choice to be open with Chelsea distinguishes their relationship from the other relationships portrayed this season. Unlike the relationship between Greg/Gary and his girlfriend Chloe, where Greg/Gary hides the fact that he murdered his ex-wife, or Tim and Victoria Ratliff’s connection, which is marred by Tim’s reluctance to tell his family they are about to lose everything and he will be going to prison, Chelsea and Rick’s relationship seems more honest. If Victoria has discovered this truth on her own, she appears to be deliberately overlooking it with the aid of her medication.
