Arcane’s animation studio expresses interest to animate Takehiko Inoue’s Vagabond manga

Fortiche, an animation studio under Arcane, has expressed a keen desire to adapt more renowned works for the screen, and one such work they’re considering is the manga “Vagabond.

During an interview with Crunchyroll, the co-founder of Fortiche animation studio (responsible for Arcane) was asked which manga he’d like to adapt. His immediate response was Vagabond by Takehiko Inoue, a masterpiece with profound depth and striking visuals that would be captivating to animate.

Translating manga to animation

According to one of Fortiche’s co-founders, one of the major hurdles lies in adapting manga into animation, particularly when it comes to maintaining the right pacing. This is tricky because readers can adjust their own speed while reading manga, but it’s harder to replicate that flow in an animated format.

When choosing manga for adaptation, it’s crucial to select those that gain something meaningful from being brought to life through animation. Frequently, I find myself disillusioned with adaptations because the rhythm of a manga, which you can adjust as a reader, doesn’t always sync effectively in animated form.

Pascal Charrue

In addition to appreciating Pascal, there are several artists whom he admires, including Naoki Urasawa, renowned for his exceptional manga creations such as Monster, 20th Century Boys, Pluto, and Billy Bat. Urasawa is highly respected in the world of manga, recognized as one of the masters of thriller and mystery genres. Despite the widespread adaptations of Urasawa’s works, he continues to serve as a significant inspiration for Pascal’s own work and his studio.

He mentioned that we greatly admire anime directors like Satoshi Kon, Katsuhiro Otomo, Mamoru Hosoda, and Hayao Miyazaki. These directors are recognized for their skill in making characters feel as real as actors, using a delicate mix of aesthetics and directing methods reminiscent of live-action performances to convey emotions and drama. Yet, he emphasized that our studio’s inspiration isn’t confined solely to animation. We also draw inspiration from Hollywood movies and Asian action films in the realm of live-action cinema.

Vagabond by Takehiko Inoue

For the Arcane studio, Vagabond has served as a significant source of artistic inspiration. Penned and illustrated by Takehiko Inoue, who is also known for Slam Dunk, this manga is an epic martial arts tale that ranks among the highest-selling series in history. The storyline follows the life of a Japanese swordsman named Musashi Miyamoto, set in 1600, and it’s based on Eiji Yoshikawa’s novel called Musashi.

Mixed reactions

As a dedicated gamer, I’ve found myself caught in the whirlwind of responses surrounding Arcane Studio’s potential involvement with Vagabond on platform X. Some enthusiasts are urging Fortiche to dive deeper into this interest and breathe life into other renowned Japanese mangas like Berserk. Yet, there’s a vocal group that wishes for 3D animation to steer clear of manga, expressing concerns that the Arcane style might not suit Vagabond. However, it’s been emphasized that the same studio doesn’t necessarily mean the same art style.

Generally speaking, there’s a lot of intrigue surrounding this decision, but there’s also a significant amount of doubt lingering. Over the past few decades, numerous manga have been transformed into anime to share more stories with audiences. In fact, most popular anime movies are based on manga such as Demon Slayer, Jujutsu Kaisen, or the latest season of Solo Leveling.
