Arcane showrunner teases the future of the franchise

As someone who has been following the progress of Arcane since its inception and witnessed its transformation from a mere concept to a global phenomenon, I must say I am both saddened and excited about its impending conclusion. The show’s impact on me and millions of others is undeniable, and it’s heartwarming to see the passion and dedication that Christian Linke and his team have poured into every frame.

The Netflix animated series, titled “Arcane“, which is inspired by the game “League of Legends” produced by Riot Games, is nearing the end of its second season. Unfortunately, this also means it’s wrapping up as a series. Many fans are disheartened by this news given the show’s impressive performance. The showrunner, Christian Linke, and his team have poured an incredible amount of energy into this project, which is evident in its quality. In an interview with “Animation Magazine“, Linke mentioned that they have invested nine years in developing approximately 11 characters, leaving them eager to explore the stories of other characters they are equally passionate about. “Some who began working on Arcane were single and now find themselves married with kids in school,” he said.

It appears that there might be more to the team’s plans than just concluding with the final three episodes of Arcane on Netflix this Saturday. According to Variety, Linke could potentially be working on a feature animation project for the future. Furthermore, Riot has already acquired scripts for a potential live-action League of Legends series, suggesting they wish to continue in this universe. Additionally, showrunner Linke hinted at exploring stories about “other characters,” which might mean that the Arcane story could persist in some capacity.

For now, let’s appreciate the series as it is, given that Link and his team deserve recognition for creating something that has touched so many hearts. As Linke stated, “We embarked on Arcane at a time when there weren’t many examples to follow.” People warned us that 40-minute episodes in animation were unheard of, even crazy. But we dared to dream, “We believe it can be done,” and I think that’s what drove us. The drama, the long moments of silence between characters – these are elements that have been quite rare, particularly in Western animation.

Ultimately, the series known as Arcane will consist of 18 episodes distributed across its two seasons. The production cost a substantial sum of $250 million, encompassing both production and marketing expenses. Despite this significant investment, it appears to have been a profitable venture. Linke commented, “I think no one has ever achieved greatness without taking risks.” He further added, “If you have the right team, you’ll produce quality work, but you need to take risks. And in our case, based on the exceptional work done during Season 1, we were eager to explore what could be accomplished with more resources and a louder voice. Sometimes, it’s just a genuine curiosity to see what someone would create if given the opportunity.

On this coming Saturday, November 23rd, the last three episodes of Arcane will simultaneously air on Netflix. After that, we’ll just have to stay tuned. I have a feeling we might not need to wait too long for further updates.
