Hugh Laurie has spoken out after the tragic death of an Apple TV series creator.
Laurie expressed her sadness over the passing of Dana Eden, who co-created and produced the Apple TV+ series Tehran. Eden was discovered unresponsive in her Athens, Greece hotel room on February 15th while the show was filming its fourth season. Greek authorities have stated that her death was not the result of foul play.
Laurie recently shared his condolences on X for those who knew Eden, revealing that the co-creator and producer of Tehran died by suicide. He described her as “brilliant, funny, and an exceptional leader,” and sent his love to her friends and family. Here’s his message:
It is with great sadness that we share the news of Dana Eden’s passing on Sunday. Best known as the co-creator and producer of ‘Tehran,’ she died in what appears to be a suicide. Dana was a remarkably talented, funny, and inspiring leader, and will be deeply missed. Our hearts go out to everyone who knew and loved her.
The New York Times first reported the death of Eden, which was later confirmed by Israel’s public broadcaster, Kan. Several Israeli news sources initially claimed she was killed and suggested a connection to Iran, but these reports were proven false and condemned by Eden’s company, Donna and Shula Productions. A statement from Laurie confirms that Eden died by suicide.
The third season of Tehran first premiered on Israeli television (Kan 11) before becoming available weekly on Apple TV internationally. The show centers around Tamar Rabinyan, an Iranian Jewish Mossad agent who must return to her birthplace, Tehran, Iran, for her debut mission. A distinctive feature of the series is its use of three languages: Hebrew, Persian, and English.
Laurie became part of the show Tehran in its third season, playing Eric Peterson, a nuclear inspector originally from South Africa. Although season 3 hadn’t finished airing, the show was already renewed for a fourth season and filming had begun in various locations. Sadly, the recent death of Eden has cast a shadow over the production and will likely affect how the rest of the season is filmed.
Eden’s unique artistic direction was key to the success of Tehran, earning it international praise and awards, which it has continued to receive. The first season even won an International Emmy for Best Drama Series in 2021. She highlighted the show’s special collaboration between actors and crew members from both Israel and Iran, noting that this mirrored the series’ focus on universal human themes.
Eden had a hopeful vision for the future of Tehran, making her passing especially heartbreaking. The heartfelt condolences from Laurie demonstrate how much she was cherished by everyone working on the show, and how irreplaceable her guidance was.
