Apple TV+’s new movie, The Gorge, which came out on Valentine’s Day 2025, promised to be a fresh take on the horror-romance genre. While there are a few good horror-romance films out there, they’re uncommon, and the story of The Gorge immediately grabbed attention. The film stars Anya Taylor-Joy and Miles Teller as Drasa and Levi, highly skilled snipers who find love while on a secret assignment.

Drasa and Levi must work together to keep dangerous, mutated creatures contained within a massive chasm called The Gorge. Though they aren’t allowed to speak to each other at first, they form a connection across the divide. Despite a promising story and strong performances from the leads, The Gorge doesn’t quite deliver, falling flat due to underdeveloped characters and an unexpected, disappointing ending.

Horror romances often combine different styles, like the tragic tone of Nosferatu or the humorous approach of Lisa Frankenstein. The Gorge adds action to the mix, featuring a strong couple – Levi and Drasa – who can both fight and protect each other. With its fresh perspective and intriguing elements, The Gorge had the potential to become a truly memorable horror romance.

The movie featured some charming scenes – like the characters playing chess, making music, and even zip-lining to see each other – that felt reminiscent of a romantic comedy. While Drasa found herself in a dangerous situation, she avoided becoming a predictable helpless character. Unfortunately, the story lost its way in the last ten minutes.

Though experienced sci-fi viewers might anticipate some of what happens, it’s still an enjoyable watch with impressive visual effects. However, the film falters slightly with an ending that doesn’t quite live up to the rest of the movie.

Okay, so Levi and Drasa finally get their happy ending, reuniting in France just like they dreamed. It’s a sweet moment, and honestly, after everything, you really want them to be together. But here’s my problem: the movie rushes through how Levi even gets to France. We don’t see his journey, we don’t know how he survives… it just happens. It’s a huge gap in the story, and it left me feeling a little cheated, honestly. A happy ending is great, but it needs to be earned, and this one felt a bit… incomplete.

Will The Gorge Get A Sequel?

Writer Zach Dean shared with The Direct that coming up with truly original stories is challenging in Hollywood, but he’s eager to see more new franchises. He specifically has an idea for a prequel, which he believes could be compelling because the characters’ relationship was so central to the original story. He also suggested exploring their characters further by including glimpses into the future.

For almost a year, The Gorge has remained popular, and it’s still a good watch – 74% of Rotten Tomatoes users recommend it. Currently, it’s the second most-watched movie on Apple TV worldwide, according to Flixpatrol, and people are clearly invested in the story of Levi and Drasa. However, if there’s another The Gorge movie, it might not continue the original story as a direct sequel.
