After a two-year break, the popular series is back on Apple TV! It’s receiving fantastic reviews and is proving to be a hit with viewers worldwide.
Currently, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters ranks as the 5th most popular show on Apple TV worldwide, according to FlixPatrol. The sci-fi series has been consistently popular over the last month, with many viewers rewatching the first season before the premiere of its second season today, February 27th.
Now that the first episode of Season 2, “Cause and Effect,” is available on Apple TV, viewers of the Monsterverse series should expect it to climb the streaming charts globally – it’s already at number four in the United States and is likely to rise in popularity worldwide.
Monarch Returns to Glowing Reviews
It’s become common for streaming shows to have long gaps between seasons, and the two-year wait for the new season of Monarch might be frustrating for viewers. Luckily, early reviews are positive! Season 2 is currently “certified fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes with an 80% approval rating based on 20 reviews, which is just slightly lower than the 86% approval Season 1 received.
Created by Chris Black and Matt Fraction, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is a series set within Legendary’s Monsterverse. Its first season, with 10 episodes, streamed on Apple TV+ from November 2023 through January 2024.
This series covers a long period in the Monsterverse timeline. The main story begins in 2015, following the destructive clash between Godzilla and other massive creatures (Titans) that destroyed San Francisco, an event shown in the 2014 film Godzilla.
The first season concluded by fast-forwarding the story to 2017, setting the stage for events similar to those in the 2019 film Godzilla: King of the Monsters. The upcoming season will center on the human characters – including those played by Kurt Russell, Anna Sawai, Kiersey Clemons, Ren Watabe, and Mari Yamamoto – as they join forces with Kong and Godzilla to prevent a new threat.
The Monsterverse Won’t Stop Growing
Legendary Entertainment’s Monsterverse is a huge success, with each movie earning over $100 million in the US and $375 million globally. The five films released so far have made a combined total of over $2.5 billion worldwide.
The monster-focused film series started in 2014 with the new Godzilla movie. Kong: Skull Island came out in 2017, and Godzilla: King of the Monsters followed in 2019. These films eventually led to a crossover event with Godzilla vs. Kong in 2021.
The Monsterverse grew beyond movies in recent years with the addition of two TV series: the animated Skull Island on Netflix and Monarch: Legacy of Monsters on Apple TV. Godzilla and Kong teamed up in the 2024 film Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire and will do so again in next year’s Godzilla x Kong: Supernova. Another series, focusing on a younger version of Lee Shaw as played by Wyatt Russell, is also being developed for Apple TV.
New episodes of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Season 2 will be released every Friday on Apple TV+ until May 1st.
