Even months after its initial release in theaters and nearly three months after becoming available for streaming, the movie F1 remains incredibly popular. The sports film continues to outperform other titles on Apple TV+, surpassing several features, including others, to maintain its position as the platform’s top streaming pick.
On February 27th, the film F1 achieved a significant win, rising to the top of the streamer’s list of the 10 most popular movies worldwide. It surpassed Eternity, which is now in second place, and has remained a chart-topper both in the U.S. and internationally.
The movie, which has been nominated for an Oscar, is now Apple TV+’s biggest hit in over 60 countries, including the United States, Canada, Mexico, and many others around the world.
What Is F1 About?
Joseph Kosinski, the director of Top Gun: Maverick, brings us F1, a film about Sonny Hayes, a once-promising race car driver. After almost thirty years away from the sport, he returns to Formula One racing to help a friend’s struggling team make one final push for victory.
Brad Pitt stars as Hayes, a driver partly based on British racer Martin Donnelly, in F1. The film also boasts a stellar supporting cast, including Javier Bardem, Damson Idris, Tobias Menzies, and Kerry Condon from Better Call Saul.
With a great cast, it’s easy to see why the movie F1 was a hit with audiences. It earned $633.2 million worldwide, more than double its estimated budget of $200 to $300 million, and received positive reviews from viewers on Rotten Tomatoes.
The film F1 impressed critics, achieving an 82% score on Rotten Tomatoes and earning four Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, as well as nods for Film Editing, Sound, and Visual Effects. Brad Pitt’s performance and the film’s intriguing concept were key to its positive reception.
Many Real-Life F1 Drivers Can Appreciate The Film’s Appeal
The movie F1 wasn’t just popular with fans and critics – it also resonated with the actual racers who inspired the story. British racer Oliver Bearman told Motorsport.com he thought the film was “fantastic,” and that it accurately showed what drivers experience, though with a bit of Hollywood flair.
While praising the film’s exciting onboard camera angles, impressive technology, and potential to attract new fans to Formula 1, Bearman acknowledged that it took some liberties with the true nature of the sport.
Honestly, I think most people are going to absolutely love this movie. Sure, a few of us might not agree with everything, but I’m confident it’ll be a huge hit with the vast majority of viewers. That’s what I believe, anyway.
Charles Leclerc of Ferrari also enjoyed the movie’s glamorous take on Formula 1. He explained that while it wasn’t entirely realistic for drivers, the Hollywood style made it appealing to a wider audience. Leclerc believes the film is great for F1, helping it reach people who wouldn’t normally follow the sport.
Given that Lewis Hamilton, a seven-time Formula 1 World Champion, helped produce the film and even made a cameo with other drivers from the 2023-2024 season, it’s no surprise Formula 1 was able to cover everything effectively.
F1 is available to stream on Apple TV.
